Sussex Horse Charity Seeks Volunteer Helpers
Adults needed for riding, mucking out, gardening and ground maintenance
Horse lovers in Sussex and Surrey are being sought to help out at a charity that looks after ex-racehorses.

Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre, based at Slinfold, near Horsham, West Sussex, is set in 90 acres of grazing and has 25 horses in its care at any one time for assessment, re-schooling and, in many cases, re-homing.

With annual running costs of more than £220,000, the charity relies heavily not only on financial donations but also on volunteer helpers - who must be over 18 years old.

Graham Oldfield and Sue Collins, who run the Centre, are keen to hear from anyone who might be in a position to provide some much-needed assistance. This could take the form of riding out or schooling the horses, mucking out stables or general yard duties. For those who love horses but prefer to keep their distance, help is also needed with gardening and ground maintenance.

"Running the Centre is expensive and time-consuming and we just can't have too many extra pairs of hands," said Graham. "Anything people can do to help, even if they can spare just a couple of hours now and again, will be much appreciated."

He urged would-be volunteers not to be put off by the fact that the Centre stables ex-racehorses.

"A few of our horses are highly strung but most fall into the 'gentle giant' category," he said. "And we never ask any volunteer to do anything with which they are uncomfortable. In fact some of our volunteers love being around horses but prefer not to get involved with them so they are happy to work in the grounds."

Anyone interested in helping or finding out more about Moorcroft can call on 01403 791916, email or check out the website,

"And, of course, if anyone wants to help these horses but can't come to the Centre we are always looking for donations, sponsorships and fundraisers," said Graham.
