ILPH Prison Sentence for Horse Abuser

On Monday 4th March at Basildon Magistrates Court Sandra Carpenter, 49, of St.
Margaret's Farm, Little Burstead, Essex was sentenced to a two month prison
sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to a grey broodmare; 2 weeks in prison
(to run concurrently) for breach of a Court Order banning her from keeping horses -
and given a further 10 year ban on keeping horses.

Comments Roly Owers, Director (Support), at the ILPH (International League for the
Protection of Horses), "We are delighted that Ms Carpenter has finally got what she
deserves, the RSPCA has done a stirling job to get this conviction.

"Some years ago Ms Carpenter was banned from keeping horses in a case in which
we were involved. One of the severely emaciated ponies that we took in was Exmoor
Annie who featured in our autumn advertising campaign in the national press. Many
concerned animal lovers contacted us to know what became of Annie - they will be
pleased to know that the law has finally caught up with her ex-owner.

Continues Roly, "Sadly this case yet again highlights the inadequacies of the
Protection of Animals Act (1911). In this instance somebody who continued to keep
horses, despite being subject to a Court ban, with the sad result that a horse was so
badly neglected she had to be put down."
