Tampa, FL – March 19, 2003 – The Tampa Bay Classic began today at the Winter Equestrian Festival at the fairgrounds - the second week of competition in the Tampa area.

The $7,500 1.45 m Time First Jump-Off held in the indoor arena had 26 entries and there were only 2 double clear rounds. Chris Kappler rode both of them. He rode Royal Kaliber to the victory and was second on Jorgen Winroth’s Profox.

A $2,500 1.35 m class had 40 entries and was won by Thrilled with Todd Minikus riding for YZ Partners.

The First Year Green Hunters had 21 horses go in two classes over fences and an Under Saddle Class. Mynos with Emil Spadone riding for Redfield Farm won the first jumping class. The other over fence class was won by Southern Lights with Samantha Darling riding for Dr. Sheila Buchbinder.

The American Invitational will be held March 29, in the Raymond James Stadium. Thirty horses qualify to be invited by the amount of money won during the Winter Equestrian Festival in designated classes. This class has the one of the largest purses of any Grand Prix type competition in this nation. The course designer for the Invitational will be Steve Stephens of Palmetto, Florida. Mr. Stephens has designed the course for the Invitational from 1985 up until now with the exception of 1992 when Bert deNementhy designed the course. Mr. Stephens, a well known course designer and horseman, competed in and won this class in 1973 riding Houdini.
