Hoofprints in the Sand Wild Horses of the Atlantic Coast

Lexington, KY (April 17, 2002) Eclipse Press announces the publication of Hoofprints in the Sand: Wild Horses of the Atlantic Coast.

Many theories surround the origins of the wild horses that inhabit the barrier islands of the Eastern seaboard. Did they swim ashore from ships that sunk en route from Spain to the New World? Were they left behind by early settlers to eke out a tenuous existence in harsh environs? In Hoofprints in the Sand, Bonnie S. Urquhart investigates how these wild herds came to populate islands off the coasts of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Urquhart uncovers the diverse ancestry of these horses. They contain the blood of Spanish stock Jennets and Barbs brought to the New World by conquistadors and explorers as well as the blood of breeds developed by Colonial Americans.

For all their similarities, the barrier island horses are unique. Urquhart finds that each population has its own character, its own history, and its own set of problems and concerns. In most cases, these animals made a unique contribution to local history. Today, they are a key attraction for visitors who flock to the Atlantic Coast barrier islands. At the same time, these horses are in a fight for their survival from real-estate developers and government agencies that question their very right to exist.

Hoofprints in the Sand brings these horses and their challenges to life and offers a vivid portrait of the islands they call home.

This is the first book for author Bonnie S. Urquhart, a registered nurse, artist, and former paramedic. A life-long horse lover, Urquhart became interested in the plight of the Eastern seaboard horses during a visit to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. She resides in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
