Association celebrates 40th anniversary in a big way
Colossal bronze Paint Horses grace APHA headquarters in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas-The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) celebrated its 40th anniversary in grand style May 30, when it unveiled four larger-than-life-size bronze Paint Horses at its Fort Worth headquarters.
APHA commissioned the project three years ago, with the goal of creating a lasting icon of the American Paint Horse breed, which has grown rapidly in popularity over the past 40 years. The association started with humble roots in Texas and has grown to include about 100,000 members in 36 nations. Since its formation in 1962, APHA has become one of the fastest-growing horse breed registries in the world, issuing pedigree certificates for more than 660,000 horses.
Renowned cowboy poet Red Steagall served as master of ceremonies for the unveiling, which was attended by several hundred Paint Horse enthusiasts from throughout the country. During his talk, Steagall said, "I can certainly see that when the American Paint Horse Association sets out to do something, they do it in a big way."
He went on to discuss how far the association has come in 40 years and how the "grit and determination" of its founders helped shape the future of the American Paint Horse breed. "Isn't it incredible how people can make great things happen when they truly believe in a horse?" he said. "This is really such a young organization to have accomplished so much."

WI Conference Backs NFU Calls For Tougher Import Controls
The NFU described the threat of foreign diseases like foot and mouth breaching Britain's borders again as just "a click away" on the computer.
NFU Food Standards Chairman Michael Seals was speaking at yesterday's annual conference of the Women's Institute in Brighton.
He said that while freer travel and trade was to be welcomed, it carried risk with it. Further routes had been opened up by mail order and the Internet.
Michael Seals told the conference: "The Internet allows us to window shop around the world. "In navigating a handful of sites myself I was just one click away from buying meat products from anywhere on the globe, whilst sitting at home in Derbyshire." The foot and mouth virus and Classical Swine Fever, just six months earlier, have both been imported into the country in recent years with disastrous effects.

Insurers Consider Clamp Down On Illegal Farriers
Leading equine insurance companies are backing the Worshipful Company of Farriers in a bid to improve the standard of shoeing in the UK and clamp down on unregistered farriers.
The companies, all members of the Equine Insurance Forum (EIF), acknowledge that a high standard of farriery and hoof care could reduce the cost of claims involving foot problems in horses and ponies. It is recommending its member companies to check that policyholders making claims have been using a registered farrier and consider including relevant questions on claims forms.
It is a criminal offence in Great Britain (other than the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) for anyone other than a registered farrier, approved farriery apprentice or veterinary surgeon, to shoe a horse or pony. Registration is achieved by completing a four year and two month apprenticeship and success in the Worshipful Company's diploma examination. Farriers can then go on to take higher qualification to become Associate or Fellowship members.
Most insurers will accept claims where surgical farriery has been recommended by a veterinary surgeon. Now the EIF is to recommend to members and veterinary surgeons that this work is carried out only by Associate members of the Worshipful Company of Farriers - although it recognises there will be exceptions. "There are farriers with many years of experience who have chosen not to look for formal higher qualifications, but we will suggest that vets justify their use of these," said EIF chairman David Buckton.

Guy Fawkes River National Park Brumby Protection Campaign  - Stage 1
To ensure the continued safety of the surviving Guy Fawkes brumbies......This is not a protest campaign
The future of the surviving Guy Fawkes brumby's survival and safety is presently in the hands of a NSW government decision to be released soon based on the findings and recommendations of the Heritage Working Party.
We need your support to
Put forward the view that because these brumbies do have a rich heritage value, they should be preserved and managed by a private organisation in the Guy Fawkes River National Park, or on adjacent land provided by the government, for future generations to appreciate.
If  brumbies are to be caught and relocated to an adjacent area then there is to be no pressure put on contractors to have this work done under tight time schedules.  Time pressure may result in the process being rushed and this will not be in the best interest of moving the brumbies safely and humanely with minimal stress. National Parks are for preserving heritage value items, and it is about time that the NSW government and NPWS realise that these brumbies should also be preserved. These brumbies have heritage value and importance in their own rite.

BetWWTS.com Bets On War Emblem To Take The Triple Crown
(ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA----6/05/02)----Horseracing fans aren’t alone in their enthusiasm for this year’s Belmont Stakes. BetWWTs.com anticipates an unprecedented level of horse wagering due to the success of their online horse wagering service, and the possibility that War Emblem may take home a Triple Crown win. The Belmont Stakes, the final gem in the Triple Crown Series, will be held June 8th at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
If War Emblem continues to outpace the competition, the spirited black colt may become horse racing’s 12th Triple Crown Winner. The last horse to take home the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.
War Emblem’s rise has surprised many, including his former owner, Russell Reineman, who sold 90 percent of the War Emblem to Saudi Prince Ahmed bin Salman, only three weeks before the Kentucky Derby. BetWWTS.com bettors, however, have shown their support for the unpredictable champion.
“We’ve seen a great deal of player confidence in War Emblem,” said Jessica Davis, Vice President of WWTS. “It’s clear that the Belmont Stakes will be one of the most heavily wagered races of the year.”

FEI Gandini Jumping Riders World Ranking List: Time For A Change
It is the high season for the riders of the FEI Gandini Jumping Rankings. Ludger Beerbaum (GER) still firmly leads the rankings with 3719 points. In May, he earned 675 points at the World Cup Final in Leipzig, but also at CSI-A Wiesbaden, Aach, Hamburg in Germany and last week-end at CSIO Lucerne.
FEI BCM World Dressage Riders Rankings
Ulla Salzgeber (GER) is getting close to the 80% average score. She is now leading the rankings with a total of 79.935 points.
Samsung Nations Cup
Germany took the lead of the Samsung Nations Cup further to the victory of their team in CSIO Lucerne (SUI) last week-end. With 32 points, Germany is ahead of Belgium (also 32 points, but over 7 competitions compared to 6 for Germany). The Leading Horse is Carling King (IRL) of Kevin Babington. Thanks to her double clear round in Lucerne, Laura Kraut (USA) is now the Leading Rider with 8 points.
20 Years of Endurance
2002 sees the 20th year of FEI Endurance and it is remarkable to witness the growth of the discipline. In 1982 there were 4 international rides. This number slowly increased to an average of 18 rides per year up until 1998. This was the year that the World Championships were held in the United Arab Emirates. Thanks to the sponsorship of the UAE NF, riders were able to ride their own horses in the Championship for the first time and 47 NFs came from all over the world to compete.

2 million spectators to see beautiful Paints in action
American Paint Horses proudly bear the colors for Six Flags Over Texas in 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas-American Paint Horses are bearing the six flags that have flown over Texas during the past 500 years as part of an exciting new outreach program undertaken by the American Paint Horse Association (APHA).
For two months, from June 8 through August 11, APHA is supplying nine highly talented Paint Horses to the Six Flags Over Texas theme park in Arlington, Texas. The horses are part of the thrill-packed "Rangers and Outlaws" Wild West Show, sponsored by APHA. The 20-minute adventure brings to life a true story of how the Texas Rangers fought outlaws and brought justice to the silver-mining town of Shafter, Texas, in 1892.
The show runs four times each day for 65 straight days and about 2 million visitors to the park during that time will have the opportunity to see the adventure. It is estimated that about half of those spectators will be under the age of 18.
"One of our primary missions is to promote the outstanding qualities of Paint Horses and to try to familiarize as many people as possible with the breed," said Jim Kelley, APHA's executive secretary. "In many cases, we just want people to know what defines an American Paint Horse. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase the breed to a young audience. Through the American Paint Horse Association's 'Rangers and Outlaws' show, we're able to introduce our breed to millions of people in a fun and entertaining environment. We were thrilled when Six Flags asked us to be part of the show."
