Two Men Convicted for Pony Cruelty

At Hayward's Heath Magistrates Court, today, Friday 18 July, David Jack and Jason Passey were found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a 10 hh 18 month old bay filly known as Isla.

Jack, 47, of 106 Forge Way Billingshurst, West Sussex and Passey, 30, of 41 Little Preston Street, Brighton, East Sussex have had their sentencing deferred until 7th August 2003 at Horsham Magistrates Court.

On 19th June last year a complaint was received by a concerned member of the public about a severely emaciated pony being kept at livery at The Tedfold Stud in Billingshurst, West Sussex.

Ted Barnes, ILPH Field Officer, who was sent out to investigate the same day comments, "Almost the entire length of Isla's spine was visible, along with her ribs and pelvic structure. Her hindquarters were caved in and showed little sign of any fat. On top of this she was suffering the apparent effects of rainscold or severe lice infestation.

Of the verdict Field Officer Ted Barnes commented, "Let us hope that magistrates will pass a sentence that reflects the severity of the crime.
