EUROPEAN DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIP IN VERDEN (GER)

German team wins gold medal, silver for the Netherlands and bronze for Denmark. Ulla Salzgeber is the old and new European Dressage Champion.

68.000 spectators attended the Championship, which was held from 10 to 12 August in Verden (GER).

The German dressage team is the new European Champion in the team competition. Altogether the German riders Nadine Capellmann (Farbenfroh), Heike Kemmer (Albano), Ulla Salzgeber (Rusty) and Isabell Werth (Anthony) achieved 5612 points. With this result the team confirmed its role as favourite.

The Dutch team with Ellen Bontje (Gestion Silvano), Arjen Teuwissen (Gestion Goliath), Gonnelien Rothenberger-Gordijn (Jonggors Weyden) and Anky van Grunsven (Gestion Idool) followed on the second place with 181 points less than the German Team. Winner of the bronze medal was the team from Denmark with Jon D. Pedersen (Esprit de Valdemar), Lone Jörgensen (FBW Kennedy), Lars Petersen (Blue Horse Cavan) and Nathalie Sayn-Wittgenstein (Fantast S). They achieved 5359 points. Fourth and fifth became the teams from Spain and Sweden.

Ulla Salzgeber with her 13-years-old horse Rusty won the individual competition. With a total result of 237,64 points she became the new European Dressage Champion. In spite of heavy rain-showers Ulla Salzgeber was the calmness herself. The expected duel between Salzgeber and Nadine Capellmann didn't occur. In the Kür Nadine Capellmann finished fifth with 77,05%. At the end she won the bronze medal with the total result of 228,38 points. Second in the Kür and winner of the silver medal was Arjne Teeuwissen from the Netherlands with Gestion Goliath with a total result of 228,47 points.

EUROPEAN VAULTING CHAMPIONSHIP IN POZNAN (POL):
Gold again for all title-holders

A very successful Vaulting Championship was organised in Poznan from 9 to 12 August 2001.

In a very friendly atmosphere, a close battle saw the victory of Switzerland, which proudly kept its European Team title, won in 1999 in Nitra (SVK). The Swiss team earned the gold medal with a score of 8,157 points ahead of Germany (8.038) and Sweden (7.314).

The Individual titles were much disputed between the German and French vaulters, who clearly dominated the championship. The Female Individual title was won by the title holder Nadia Zülow (GER) with Rubins Universe, with 8.857 points. Silver went to Nicola Stroh (GER) with 8.514 pts and bronze to the French Maud Bousignac with 8.318 pts.

The three 1999 medal winners of the Male Individual titles reiterated their exploit, and almost in the same order! Matthias Lang (FRA) with Farceur Breceen HN, kept the gold with 8.860 pts, followed by former bronze medallist Kai Vorberg (GER) with 8.657 pts and Gero Meyer (GER), who took the bronze with 8.455 pts.

SAMSUNG NATIONS CUP AT DUBLIN AND BRATISLAVA
Germany and Belgium Celebrate a Good Friday

The German team took their second Nations Cup on the trot when taking the honours in Bratislava last Friday 10 August 2001 while in Dublin, Belgium won the coveted Aga Khan trophy for the very first time.

A formidable line-up of 12 twelve teams battled it out in the Slovakian city where the current Samsung Nations Cup series leaders, Germany, won the competition with 0 points penalties, followed by Switzerland with 8 points and France with 12 points.

The same day in Dublin there was high drama in the battle for the Aga Khan Cup which has evaded Belgian hands during the 75-year history of Nations Cup jumping at the Royal Dublin Society show grounds. The Irish were hotly-tipped to follow on their European team and treble Nations Cup successes in recent months but only finished 4th. Belgium won the trophy with 8 points penalties followed by France with 9 points and USA with 12 points.

As Gijon begins next week, Germany still heads the league table with Italy in second, Belgium third and Ireland and France sharing fourth position and the tension is mounting just one month before the final.

There are four Nations Cups left before the Final in Madrid from 20 to 23 September: Gijon (ESP) 21-26 August, Rotterdam (NED) 30 Aug-2 Sep, Spruce Meadows (CAN) 5-9 Sep and Sofia (BUL) 6-9 Sep.

The Czech Equestrian Federation just informed the FEI of the cancellation of CSIO Poderbrady due to take place from 13-16 September 2001

VAULTING COMMITTEE MEETING, POZNAN (POL) 5 - 6 AUGUST 2001

The FEI Vaulting Committee held its annual meeting in Poznan (POL) on 5th and 6th August just prior to the European Vaulting Championship. Dr Gernot Spitzer (AUT), President of the International Vaulters; Club, attended the meeting in a consultative capacity.

The meeting was the last one to be chaired by Mrs Helma Schwarzmann (GER) after 12 years as either member or Chairman of the Committee. Mr Jean-Michel Pinel (FRA) will replace Mrs Schwarzmann as Chairman in 2002.

The Committee agreed that the qualification criteria, which shall apply for the World Championship 2002, should remain unchanged from the qualification criteria required for the 2000 World Championship i.e. an average score of at least 6.0 points (final result in one round) reached at least two CVI**s in Europe (one CVI**/* outside Europe).

The Committee discussed at length a proposal to remove the age limit in the team competition. As this would be a far-reaching move, it was agreed that the opinion of National Federations would be sought before any further action is taken in this regard.
