LEXINGTON, KY-- (August 16, 2002) ---The Kentucky State Veterinarian's office reported late on Friday, Aug. 16, that seven more horses in the state had been confirmed positive for West Nile virus (WNV). That brings the total number of positive horses in the state this year to 15, according to Rusty Ford of the State Veterinarian's office. Of those 15 cases this year, seven survived, seven were euthanized, and one was found dead.

None of the seven cases confirmed today had been vaccinated against West Nile virus.
The seven new WNV cases include two from Fayette County (an aged Thoroughbred mare and a 15-year-old Thoroughbred mare); two from Barren County (an eight-month-old Tennessee Walking Horse colt and a 2-year-old Quarter Horse colt); and one each in Logan County (6-year-old Quarter Horse stallion), Marion County (10-year-old Walking Horse mare), and Todd County (13-year-old warmblood mare).
