Callous Horse Owner Receives a Second Ban

On Monday 14th October, at Basildon Crown Court, an Essex woman was given a 12 year ban on keeping horses and a 4 month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Sandra Carpenter, 50, of St. Margaret's Farm, Little Burstead, was appealing against a ban of 10 years and a suspended prison sentence of 6 weeks given to her on 4
March this year at Basildon Magistrates Court for causing unnecessary suffering to a grey broodmare, who was subsequently euthanased, and a breach of a ban imposed on her in 1993.

In October 1993 she was banned from keeping horses for 20 years for causing unnecessary suffering to 12 horses one of which was ILPH Annie, but this was reduced to 10 years on appeal.

Says ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Field Officer Michael Smith, "Ms Carpenter is no stranger to Courts, but on appeal this Monday she wasn't quite so lucky as she was in 1993. This time both her ban and her suspended prison sentence were increased."

Says Inspector Angela Pearce, on behalf of the RSPCA who prosecuted Carpenter, "We have to protect horses from people like her. I would like to think that the horse's death wasn't in vain."
