With a successful show behind him at Abu Dhabi last week, commentators felt that the heat of the Emirates might be affecting Lennon's horses when they arrived in Dubai, but after a faltering start, the Co. Down-born rider recovered to take equal third in the Six-Bar competition on Thursday with <I Caesar>, and tonight won the Leading Rider Award after <Impact> rode a classic double clear round, finishing less than two seconds behind Britain's William Funnel in the Grand Prix.

Wellington … The Equestrian Mecca of the United States
A lifestyle that puts 15,000 horses in 10 square miles for 10 weeks of multi-million dollar sport can only be found in one place - Wellington. Non-existent 30 years ago, today this Florida village is home to 50,000 residents and was recently ranked by Money Magazine as the seventh best place to live in communities under 100,000. The population swells during "season" when an elite flock of snowbirds from across the nation and the oceans settle in to compete in the Olympic disciplines of dressage and show jumping as well as the sport of kings - polo. This dynamic, and its effect on Wellington, is a story about money, power, sport, celebrities, and the love of horses.
The equestrian industry in Wellington generates $350 million annually to the community. The equestrian lifestyle has inspired fashion, décor, cuisine, a host of businesses and its own society. Why is Wellington the center of this equestrian explosion? How did it happen? Who are the movers, shakers, and kingpins who've built empires out of scrubland and attracted some of the most elite people in the world as seasonal and permanent residents?

Appalling Neglect of Horses' Feet Leads to Prosecution
Today Monday, 12th January, Charles and Gillian Harwood were before Cheltenham Magistrates Court for causing unnecessary suffering to 5 horses in their care.
Mr & Mrs Harwood of Four Shires Stone Farm, Moreton-in-Marsh, Glos pleaded guilty to the charges. Because of exceptional mitigating circumstances the Magistrates gave the couple 3 years conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,464.25p costs between them.

Following a call to the ILPH, Field Officer Peter Griffiths visited the farm on 2 November 2000 to investigate. He found a number of stallions who, although living in filthy conditions, were in reasonable bodily condition. After several visits from him and following his advice, conditions at the farm steadily improved. Then, due to the onset of Foot and Mouth Disease he could no longer visit as there were cattle on the premises.

horse The Kinder Collar
Horses in driving harness often damage the point of shoulder because they cannot judge their own position in blinkers and can easily catch themselves on doorways or in hazards at competitions.
The brainchild of Fiona Tedman, the Empathy Collar is the result of meticulous research, over several years, to design a driving collar for a cob with an injured shoulder. After experimenting with different shaped collars, it was found that a curved style, which sweeps up over the point of the shoulder, but dips below the soft part of the neck, makes load pulling much more comfortable for horses that have suffered some kind of shoulder injury as well as smaller driving horses with a low headset, such as Shetlands or cobs, that often experience pressure to the shoulder or windpipe when using conventional breastcollars.
