Roy James talks to a customer about the Field Shelter

Derby House - The Master's Of Stabling

QUALITY craftsmanship, an eye for detail and a desire to build the best are key assets that drive the team at Derby House Stabling.

Based in the village of Eardisley, Herefordshire, the stabling and joinery division has been in operation for more than 30 years and was purchased by the Derby House Group from CAM Equestrian in 2002.

The company offer a wide range of joinery services, buildings, stables, accessories and yard products worldwide.

Roy James, the manager of Derby House Stabling has worked for the company since the mid eighties and has a wealth of experience in all aspects of joinery and the design of equestrian buildings.

"We are a very close knit team at Eardisley and when the company joined Derby House the experienced craftsmen and the sales team who had previously worked for CAM Joinery were transferred," explains Roy.

"Skills built up over the years are very hard to replace and it is good to know that those skills remain at Derby House, a firm is only as good as its workforce!"

Traditional values remain a key focus for the business and these are something that only 30 years experience can provide.

Roy says he was fortunate to work with the founder of CAM Joinery and to be part of a company that grew into a large supplier of stabling and joinery.

"I learned an awful lot during those first years and have continued to keep up with new techniques. I know that in every job we take on the combined years of knowledge comes through in the finished product.

"We continue to manufacture stables and related joinery products in top quality materials to the same exacting standards as we have for the past 30 years and I am determined that Derby House will become one of the largest suppliers of these products in the country.

"I think it also helps that I grew up on a farm and worked in agriculture before joining the company, so like to think I have that hands on, practical approach which helps to ensure each project we take on is looked at individually to ensure all the elements fit together to make a first class job.

"Derby House was established in 1968 by the Dickson family and has since become one of the leading equestrian mail order companies. We are very pleased to have joined a group who are dedicated to providing first class customer service."

The Derby House Stabling team now consists of a 15-strong workforce ranging from sales to accounts and administration to joiners and site engineers, all led by Roy.

The company designs and constructs many buildings for all purposes not only the equestrian market. Fishing lodges, garages, toilet blocks and shop kiosks, Derby House has the specialist skills and know how to meet any customer requirements.

"Often customers, architects and builders will contact us and we will all work together on a project, as many of the jobs we take on are bespoke and we need to meet the particular needs of the client " says Roy.

Over the years the company has built many yards in the equestrian world, particularly racing and one person who is a big fan of the Derby House Stabling skills is Somerset-based, top trainer, Paul Nicholls.

"So far we have completed five major projects for the multi-winning trainer and we are currently building another block to add to his yard at Shepton Mallet."

A recent new launch for the company is the Derby House Mobile Field Shelter, built on a metal sub frame and comes complete with skids to allow the building to be moved around a field to avoid poaching the paddock.

The company is very excited about this new product, which is made using only top quality materials and is already attracting a lot of attention.

With every member of the workforce being in place for several years, it is easy to understand how each has secured their position and knows their role inside out.

One of the company's major sellers is a two stable block and tackroom and Roy says this can be built and constructed in the space of a week if required.

"We aim to construct top quality stabling and associated buildings at a price customers can afford and we want to keep them coming back," adds Roy.

Derby House Stabling produce a comprehensive 64 page catalogue full of products from doors to windows, shelters to stables, jumps, mangers, electric fencing, drinkers and lots more.
