Sir Peter O’Sullevan CBE Gold Cup treat at Cheltenham

Sir Peter O’Sullevan CBE will be presenting a ‘replica’ Gold Cup to Brooke Hospital for Animals supporter Mrs Fran Fuller during the National Hunt Festival in Cheltenham this month.

Mrs Fuller is fulfilling her lifelong ambition of riding around the racecourse at Cheltenham with leading jockey Jim Culloty.

Fran is doing this ride in support of the Brooke Hospital for Animals, a British charity that is dedicated to improving the condition and well being of working equines in parts of the developing world.

Fran, whose once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has been arranged by BBC Radio Gloucestershire, explains what this ride means to her: “I have been riding and going to the races since I was seven and even my daughter’s middle name is Kerstin, named after the 1958 Gold Cup winner. This is a dream come true but I also wanted to use this opportunity to raise awareness about the work of the Brooke Hospital and its efforts to alleviate the terrible suffering of working equines overseas.”

The presentation by Sir Peter will take place at midday on Wednesday 12th March by the Arkle statue above the Winner’s Enclosure at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Speaking about his involvement, Sir Peter O’Sullevan said: "On behalf of everyone at the Brooke I would like to congratulate Fran on achieving her life's ambition of riding round the Gold Cup course. This ride is a great way to highlight the charity's work and I am delighted to be a part of it.”

Edward Gillespie, Managing Director at Cheltenham Racecourse, has generously allowed the Brooke Hospital for Animals to use a tent by the Arkle statue above the Winner’s Enclosure throughout Wednesday 12th March to raise support, awareness and funds for its work.

There are an estimated 30 million working equines worldwide. These animals are usually the only source of income for their poverty-stricken families and work under extreme conditions of heat, pain, exhaustion and illness. The Brooke Hospital for Animals was founded in Egypt in 1934 to improve the condition and well being of equine animals overseas by providing free veterinary treatment for the working horses, donkeys and mules of some of the poorest people in the world and by advising and training their owners. It is the only organisation dedicated to providing veterinary treatment for working equines, alongside training owners, to bring about lasting change. It operates in Egypt, Jordan, India and Pakistan.
