First Premium Cleveland Bay Stallion in Powys

FOR the first time ever, a Premium Cleveland Bay stallion will stand in Powys for the season.

Good news for the region and the Cleveland Bay breed, four-year-old Tregoyd Journeyman, owned by Colin and Margaret Green looks set to have an outstanding future.

Based at the Tregoyd Stud, Three Cocks, Powys, Tregoyd Journeyman will also be one of 12 top UK Premium stallions taking part in the Cleveland Bay Horse Society's King George V Cup competition at York Livestock Centre on April 26.

Tregoyd Journeyman

Out of Tregoyd Suzy, a premium mare, the sire, Knaresborough Chancellor, was bred in Yorkshire at the famous Knaresborough Stud.

Worldwide there are only about 400 pure-bred breeding mares with only about 80 foals born each year. The breed features on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust's critical list.

"Tregoyd Journeyman, who is 16.2hh with approximately 10in bone, will run out with his mares as many of our other stallions have done," says his breeder Colin Green whose stud nestles at the foot of the Brecon Beacons Park near Hay-on-Wye.

"The breed is known for its excellent temperament which they pass on. And Journeyman already has two sons - Tregoyd Talisman and Tregoyd Josh.

"Although we are keen to cover pure-bred mares, many people like to cross the breed with thoroughbreds.

"The Cleveland Bay is very versatile and is now used to produce sport horses for dressage, show jumping and eventing," adds Colin.
