In 1959, the British National Pony Society and the British Show Pony Society challenged American pony riders to their first International Hunter Pony Competition. Held at the National Horse Show in New York City, the best U.S. ponies and riders met head-to-head with the best British ponies in the small and large pony divisions. In 1967, American Horse Shows Association, now known as USA Equestrian, made the ‘Pony Finals’ a national event, open to all members who met the qualifying criteria. The Championships are held at a different site each year and, since 1984, have included the popular head-to-head Pony Medal Championship. The USAE National Pony Jumper Championships have also been added to the event.
