100 Years Young!

Welsh Pony and Cob Society Celebrate Centenary Year at HOYS

The Horse of the Year Show (2nd - 7th October) is commemorating the Welsh Pony and Cob Society’s Centenary Year (1901 – 2001) with a very special celebration of this versatile breed.

In order to recognise the high standard and exceptional achievements of both Pure and Part Bred Welsh Ponies and Cobs; found successfully competing in all spheres of equestrianism, the Horse of the Year Show have introduced for one year only, a Welsh Centenary Championship. To be judged and awarded during the star-studded Gala Night performance on Sunday 7th October, in front of a capacity audience, the Welsh Championship is designed to showcase the native Welsh breeds.

Rob Jones, Welsh Pony & Cob Society remarked, “Welsh Blood is a proven success in all but a few disciplines, with Pure and Part-Bred Ponies and Cobs consistently winning at the highest level. The Horse of the Year Show is the pinnacle of the entire showing calendar and we are delighted that we are able to recognise the versatility and all-round achievements of the Welsh breeds at HOYS during our 2001 Centenary year”

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society and Horse of the Year Show will invite those registered Pure and Part-Bred Ponies and Cobs that win, or are the highest placed in their Championship Class at this year’s Show, to take part in the Preliminary Judging on Sunday afternoon. Six finalists will then be chosen to go through to this prestigious Centenary Championship, which will take place in the International Arena on Gala Night.

Mike Gill, Grandstand Media’s Director commented “The British Native Breeds including the Welsh are an important part of our British Equestrian heritage, all of which have undergone a surge of interest in the last few years. The Show is traditionally about being the best, and as such, it is fitting that we award such a Championship this year. Horse of the Year Show is looking forward to welcoming Welsh Pony and Cob Society members who have the opportunity to see this special championship in their Centenary Year.”
