Lennon Wins Gold Medal At World Equestrian Games

IRELAND¹S DERMOTT LENNON, from Loughbrickland in Co. Down, riding the Irish-bred mare, Liscalgot, has won the World Championship Show Jumping Gold
Medal at today¹s (Sunday) final competition in Jerez, Spain.

This is the first Gold ever won by Ireland at World Championship level.

Qualifying yesterday as one of the world¹s Top Four riders after four days of competition at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, the 33 yr old Lennon today competed against Eric Navet (France), Helena Lundback (Sweden) and Peter Wylde (USA), in a nerve-wracking jump-off that involved each finalist riding the other finalists¹ horses over a world championship course of jumps.

Lennon finished on faults, thereby clinching the World Gold Medal.

Ireland has only ever reached the final on three occasions - once in O82, when Commdt. Gerry Mullins finished Fourth, and twice (O74, O78) when the legendary Eddie Macken finished in Silver Medal position.

Yesterday (Saturday) Ireland finished with three riders in the World Top Ten - Lennon, Peter Charles and Kevin Babington.

Lennon is already a member of the Irish show jumping team who are currently European Champions
