USA Equestrian Releases Governance Document

USA Equestrian today released a comprehensive report on the sport's governance in preparation for a meeting with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Membership and Credentials Committee in Miami, Florida, this Saturday. USA Equestrian is the National Federation for the sport, as recognized by its International Federation, the FEI, headquartered in Switzerland.

The lengthy document was prepared in response to inquiries from the USOC in a letter dated November 25, 2002, announcing the meeting and inviting the Federation to respond.

In addition, USA Equestrian released a letter dated December 9, 2002, requesting details and making suggestions about the format of the upcoming meeting, to which it has received no response as yet.

USA Equestrian Executive Director Lori Rawls, who supervised preparation of the report, commented, "We've been working every day on our response since we received the USOC letter just before Thanksgiving. Our staff, our lawyers, and our officers all contributed to it. We looked at this as a very positive opportunity to gather together so many different aspects of what we do, and how the sport's governance works, all into one place. We think it is going to be very educational for the USOC and everyone who is interested in how the sport should be governed, and how we got to this point."

Rawls noted that the USOC letter of November 25, the Federation's responses, and its exhibits, are all available at www.equestrian.org/EquestrianGovernance. She stated that certain exhibits relating to employment contracts have been redacted for reasons of privacy.

USA Equestrian Inc., as the National Equestrian Federation of the U.S., is the regulatory body for the Olympic and World Championship sports of dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, reining, show jumping, and vaulting, as well as 19 other breeds and disciplines of equestrian competition. As
the country's largest multi-breed organization, the Federation has over 80,000 members and recognizes more than 2,800 competitions nationwide each year. It governs all aspects of competition, including educating and licensing all judges, stewards, and technical delegates who officiate at these shows.
VISION STATEMENT
The vision of USA Equestrian is to provide leadership for equestrian sport in the United States of America, promoting the pursuit of excellence from the grass roots to the Olympic Games, based on a foundation of fair, safe competition and the welfare of its horses, and embracing this vision, to be the best national equestrian federation in the world.
