2004 North American Young Riders’ Championships Welcomes Maui Jim as Title Sponsor

Old Mill Creek, IL—December 9, 2003—The 2004 North American Young Riders’ Championships (NAYRC) is proud to welcome Maui Jim Sunglasses as title sponsor. The Maui Jim North American Young Riders’ Championships will return to Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, IL, August 10-15, 2004.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Maui Jim on board with us,” said NAYRC event director Howard Simpson. “Maui Jim has shown a strong commitment to equestrian sports with its U.S. Eventing Association sponsorship and we know their support of our Championships will make the Young Rider experience even better for every one of our competitors.”

As part of its sponsorship, Maui Jim will provide each participant in the 2004 North American Young Riders’ Championships with a pair of Maui Jim Sunglasses in an NAYRC custom hard case. “Maui Jim is recognized as the top of the line in sunglasses and we thank them for making these glasses available to all our riders,” Simpson said.

The NAYRC is the premier equestrian competition in North America for young riders, age 16-21. Young equestrians come from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands to vie for team and individual Championships in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage, and eventing. The NAYRC is an official USA Junior Olympic-Equestrian event.

For many competitors, the NAYRC is their first experience riding on a team, as well as competing under the rules of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body for equestrian sport.

“The North American Young Riders’ Championships have a cherished history of giving young riders their first taste of FEI competition,” said Mike Dalton, President of Maui Jim, Inc. “No one puts as much care and effort into making the Championships a meaningful experience for the riders as Howard Simpson and everyone at Tempel Farms. We are thrilled to be able to support what Tempel Farms does, and we hope that our involvement enhances the experience for the riders.”

Maui Jim’s sponsorship of the NAYRC is part of the company’s broad support of equestrian sports that includes a unique program with the U.S. Eventing Association (USEA). Through the USEA, Maui Jim is sponsoring a raffle featuring a grand prize of a trip to Maui including two round-trip plane tickets, five nights/six days hotel accommodations, plus a one-day trip on the Maui Jim, a 51-foot yacht where the winners will be able to sightsee, snorkel, whale watch, sunbathe, or relax.

Raffle tickets are sold for $25 each or five tickets for $100. A maximum of 11,000 tickets will be sold. Proceeds benefit individual USEA Areas and the creation of the Maui Jim Young Rider Scholarship.

The NAYRC began in 1974 as an eventing challenge between the United States and Canada. A Dressage Championship was added in 1981, and Show Jumping debuted in 1982. The first complete NAYRC was held in British Columbia, Canada in 1982. Tempel Farms has hosted the Championship more than any other location, 13 times since 1985.
