WARD CAPTURES SEASON OPENER
WELLINGTON, FL -- JANUARY 24 - Showjumping
veteran, McLain Ward of Brewster, NY, captured his first victory of the '2001
season aboard his new mount, 4 Seasons. Ward bested a field of 42 starters in
the opening meet of the Cosequin Winter Equestrian Festival, scoring a
fault-free ride over the Americhoice Open Speed 12 obstacle jumping course in
60.80 seconds. Ward also finished in the ribbons in at least five other
competitions today. 2000 Olympian and 6 time AGA rider of the year, Margie
Engle of Wellington, FL finished behind Ward in 62.30 seconds on board Hidden
Creek's Alvar. Third place finish went to USET Veteran, Todd Minikus of
Loxahatchee, FL up on Pandora who finished up just splits behind 62.36. McLain
Ward took a fourth in this competition as well.
The 29th anniversary season of the Cosequin Winter Equestrian Festival opened
its doors at Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club on Wednesday with over 2,500
horses scheduled to compete this week alone and over 4000 horses on the
grounds. The Cosequin WEF offers over $3 million in total prizes and features
four qualifiers to the 2001 World Cup in Sweden. Top athletes to watch include
'96 Olympic Team silver medalists, Anne Kursinski, Peter Leone and Leslie
Burr-Howard and 2000 Olympians, Margie Engle, Laura Kraut, Lauren Hough and
Nona Garson. The Cosequin WEF runs Wednesdays through Sundays at Palm Beach
Polo Equestrian Club, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, now to March 11. Tickets are
