CANADA WON THE SECOND EVER CRIO
EVENT
Canada won the second ever International Official Reining Competition
(CRIO).The CRIO was organised for the first time in North America in Glastone
(USA) on 23 June.
After the first-go of the two round competitions, the Canadian team was three
points behind the heavily favoured Americans.The Canadian finally won the class
with a point total of 1304.0, followed by USA with 1299.0 and Germany 1231.0
points. Japan finished 4th. The best three scores of the team
composed of three or four riders count for the team results. Jason Grimshaw
(CAN) won the individual title on Listo Pollito Lena.
Werner Ernst receives 'Silver Camera' award
Organised by CHIO Aachen, the FEI and the Sparkasse, the "Silver
Camera" rewards the "Best Equestrian photo of the Year". The
Award is presented at CHIO Aachen.
The 2001 trophy was awarded to German photographer Werner Ernst (67) who has
been documenting equestrian sport in pictures for more than 30 years He knows
all the top riders - and they know him. The shot was taken at last year's
German National Young Horse Championship in Warendorf (GER). The picture shows
the four-year-old Trakehner stallion Latimer, 'cuddling up' with his rider
Hans-Jürgen Ambrust after they had just won the class.
The second place went to "And Both Walked Away Unhurt" and Barry
O'Brian from Australia. The jury awarded the third prize to "Emotion
Sydney 2000," the work of Jan Gyllesten of Sweden. A special prize was
awarded to the picture "time to say goodbye" made by Horst Rudel from
Germany.
Seventy-two pictures by 27 photographers were presented to the contest.
Photographers from Mexico, USA, China, Australia, Canada, Sweden, the
Netherlands and of course Germany participated.

SAMSUNG NATIONS CUP
Italy leads the Samsung Nations Cup standings with 51 points ahead of Germany
42 and Belgium 37 points. Ludger Beerbaum (GER) is the Leading Rider with 7
points on three competitions, followed by Markus Fuchs (SUI) with also 7 points
but on four competitions. The Leading Horse is Elkintot (ridden by Italian
Massimo Grassato).
Placed third in Aachen (GER) on 15 June, first in Helsinki (FIN) the next day
and second in Drammen (NOR) on 23 June, With the top eight scores taken into
account for the standings, Italy was obliged to drop their lowest score,
achieved in Modena (ITA), which leaves them heading Germany by a nine-point
margin.
Belgium won Aachen Nations Cup followed by home team Germany and Italy.
Helsinki Nations Cup was won by Italy ahead of the Netherlands and Germany. In
Drammen, USA scored their first victory in the 2000/2001 Samsung Nations Cup
Series when the consistent Italian team had to settle for runner-up spot this
time, followed by home team Norway.

McLEOD UPSETS QUALITY FIELD

Sammi McLeod and the fourteen-year-old gelding Frederick Hunter caused a major
upset recently by taking out the 44th Melbourne International Three
Day Event in fine style.
The combination, who are on the Australian squad in the lead up to the World
Equestrian Games next year, led the three star class from the outset with a
truly eye catching performance in the arena to go into the cross country two
points ahead of their nearest rivals, Sydney competitor Amanda Ross and her
newcomer Wynella Rialto.
Melbourne's course this year was testing but conquerable and Sammi and Fred
came home clear and within time to cement their lead.
The final day saw just one rail separating the top three, two rails the top
eight!
With the going particularly difficult due to rain and with such a tight track
with equally short turns, many doubted whether Sammi would have the experience
and tenacity to guide Fred around penalty free.
Riding last also meant contending with slippery conditions on each take-off
created from previous horses, but it didn't phase her, Sammi (who was seventh
at Badminton on Hunter Red in 1999) showing why she is firming as a favourite
for WEG selection by jumping clear to take out her first major victory on home
soil, finishing on her dressage score of 43.6.
Sam Lyle, back from competing in England recently placed second on his
contender Foxdale Royal Venture, a horse who made many heads turn, the
combination finishing on 48.4.
1999 Melbourne winners Christine Bates and the careful Masterprint showed
national selectors their back in form, one second time penalty showjumping
pushing them down to third by the narrowest of margins - 0.4, to complete on
48.8.
The win was no easy task for McLeod though. "It was the scariest thing I
have ever done in my life", she said.
Scotland's Pauline McKee and her eight year old Irish Sport Horse Mister Moss
(by Golden Years) entered but withdrew their intentions prior to the dressage
phase.
Australian, New Zealand and a few international competitors will now focus
their intentions on Adelaide**** to be held in November.
REMINDER EUROPEAN EVENTING OPEN FORUM IN LUHMUELEN (GER)
The European Eventing Forum, initially due to take place in Badminton, will be
organised in conjunction with the CCI***/CIC** in Lumühlen (GER).
The Forum will take place on Friday 6 July 2001 at 5 pm, on the show ground, in
the tent located next to the Dressage arena.
