AUSTRALIA WINS SAUMUR CAI-A DRIVING PAIRS

Australian Boyd Exell, in a preliminary to the World Pairs Driving
Championships to be held in Germany in August, won the 2001 International
Saumur Driving Event held 13 to 15 July in Saumur, France.Driving his two 16
hand black Gelderlander horses trained by Sarah Garnett, Deemster & Julius,
Exell scored the best dressage test on Friday to take a commanding lead over
thirty-one European pairs drivers.
Exell stretched his lead to nearly 20 points by winning the rain-shortened
marathon on Saturday, driving a technically proficient and quick
marathon.Hazard number 6, was closed by the officials, after torrential rains
the previous night had made the hazard with a steep bank too dangerous.
A double-clear perfect cones round, one of only two in the class, in front of
more than 10,000 spectators which filled the Prince Albert arena of the
Hippodrome, sealed the victory for Exell, who is based in England in order to
compete internationally.
American, Chester Weber, another of the young breed of international drivers,
was not as fortunate.Weber saw his two-point lead in the horse teams class
evaporate when he picked up 9 penalties in the final phase, allowing Hollands
Harry DeRuyter to win, with Swiss drivers Daniel Wurgler and Werner Ulrich
finishing second and third.Weber had the best score in dressage, and was able
to hold the lead after the marathon that was won by George Knell of Germany But
one cone and four time penalties dropped Weber from first to a fifth place
overall finish.

SAMSUNG NATIONS CUP UPDATE
Germany in the lead after Falsterbo (SWE) and Lummen (BEL)
The incredible Irish, record-breaking 10-time winners in the 1999/2000 series,
took the current Samsung Nations Cup league by storm that 13 July when winning
at both the 4-Star fixture in Falsterbo, Sweden and the 3-Star leg at Lummen in
Belgium.
Their team victory at the European Championships at Arnhemseveral weeks ago
seems to have propelled them into winning mode once again and the squad which
had to settle for second behind Germany at the previous leg in Ikast, Denmark
the previous weekend reversed the placings at Falsterbo where the home side had
to settle for third place.
It was a bad weekend for Italy as, in Lummen, their team was eliminated in the
first round.
As the Samsung Nations Cup series moves on to Poznan in Poland next weekend,
Germanyhold the lead with 54 points ahead of Italy on 51 and Ireland have
rocketed up from eighth to fifth position.

PRESS ACCREDITATION TO THE 2001 SAMSUNG NATIONS CUP FINAL
The Organising Committee of the Samsung Nations Cup Final, which will be held
in Madrid (ESP) from 20 23 September, will centralise the accreditation and
hotel reservation of the foreign press.
As of 20 July, the accreditation and hotel reservation form will be published
on the official website of the Nations Cup Final

JUMPING COMMITTEE MEETING
The FEI Jumping Committee held its annual statutory meeting from 2-3 July in
Baarlo (NED) at the home of Committee member Mr Emile Hendrix following the
European Jumping Championship.
Among the items on the agenda for discussion were the following:
Nations Cup
The Committee discussed the conditions for the Nations Cup Regional League
system and decided to recommend a completely restructured proposal, which will
be put to the various bodies for approval.
Substitution of teams qualified for the second round of Nations Cup
competitions
The next highest placed team will replace any qualified team withdrawing before
the second round of the Nations Cup competition. The team withdrawing cannot be
placed or receive prize money.
Olympic Games
The minimum requirements to be met by the Olympic Games Organising Committee,
as well as the qualifying system for the Olympic Games were reviewed by the
Committee. Proposals for change will be presented to the FEI Bureau for
approval.
One Day CSIO events
The Committee rejected a request to host a one -day CSIO event.
Guidelines for Organisers
The FEI in consultation with the Organisers and the International Jumping
Riders' Club are currently producing guidelines for organising international
events.
INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN YEARS TROPHY FOR JUNIOR AND YOUNG
RIDERS
Permission was withdrawn for Young Riders to compete in the above series in
2002 until the age of 23. The age limit for Young Riders from 2002 will be 21
years.
Rules for International Jumping Events
The Committee considered many proposed changes to the rulebook as received from
the Rules Revision Working Group. A final draft will be presented to the FEI
Bureau for approval in November this year. The General Assembly will be asked
for its approval of the new rulebook on the occasion of the 2002 Assembly. The
new edition will come into effect on the 1 January 2003
Competitions for six and seven year old horses
The Committee approved the following conditions for six and seven year old
horse competitions. It was recognised that these competitions are optional for
organisers to hold, however, if held, the following conditions must be
respected from 2002:
- The OC of an event may include special competitions for 6 and 7-year-old
horses in its programme, for which a competitor may be invited to bring one or
more horses, in addition to the maximum number of three horses permitted for a
CSI. The number of six and seven-year-old horses permitted per competitor must
be stated in the schedule;
- A horse ridden in these special young horses competitions may not be ridden
in other CSI competitions at the same event;
- In classes where age groups are combined, there may be a combined
classification;
- Six and seven-year-old horses may be ridden in the same competition over the
same course. However, the 7-year-old horses will receive a handicap, i.e. the
obstacles for horses of this age must be approximately 5 cms higher than those
for the 6-year-old horses. The width of obstacles may be increased in spread
for 7-year-old horses. The rest of the course must be the same for both age
groups;
- Extra competitors from the host country only, may be invited to take part in
these competitions;
- Height of obstacles for 6-year-old horses must be approximately 1.30 cm;
- There may also be special competitions for 8-year-old horses;
- If international competitions for 5-year-old horses are held, the rules
already established for these competitions must be respected.
Revision of the Memorandum for International Jumping Events
The Rules Revision Working Group will commence work on the revision of the
Memorandum for International Jumping Events.
THE INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN YEARS TROPHY FOR YOUNG RIDERS AND JUNIORS
The International Golden Years Trophy for Young Riders
The International Young Riders' Golden Years Trophy was created a number of
years ago by the late Mr Raymond Hutse (BEL), to give young riders the
opportunity to participate at higher level international jumping events before
leaving the young rider category.
This year there are a total of six qualifying events, plus a semi-final and a
final. Five qualifiers have already taken place, the last qualifier will be
held in Copenhagen (DEN) from 10 - 12 August.
Qualified for the semi-final are the best 25 riders on a point system selected
from four of the qualifiers, each of these riders must have competed in at
least two of the six events. In addition, the winner of the Grand Prix
competition at each of the qualifying events is permitted to take part at the
semi-final.

Barcelona (ESP) from 14 - 16 September:

The International Golden Years Trophy for Juniors
This series was created for the first time in 2001. The same conditions apply
for the Juniors as apply for the Young Riders.
The semi-final for the Juniors will take place also in Barcelona (ESP) during
the same time as the semi-final for the Young Riders.
The final for the Juniors, however, will take place in Vienna (AUT) from 28 -
30 October.
After five qualifying competitions and with on still to take place in
Copenhagen (DEN) from 10 - 12 August, the following Juniors are qualified for
the semi-final:

FIRST SEMINAR FOR INDOOR COURSE DESIGNERS IN DRIVING
In view of the introduction of an Indoor World Cup Driving series, the FEI
organised a first course designer seminar, in Deurne, (NED) on 14 July 2001,
with the goal to establish uniform criteria for indoor driving competitions.
The first season of the new indoor Driving World Cup for Four-in-Hand horses
will start in November 2001. It comprises eight events.
The seminar was held on the 14 July 2001 in the Dutch Equestrian Centre in
Deurne and was directed by Tjeerd Velstra, the former Chairman of the FEI
Driving Committee. Participating were five Driving Course Designers from four
countries. Also in attendance were Max Ammann, the Director of the World Cup,
Henk-Jan Drabbe, Jumping Course Designer, Gerrit-Jan Swinkels, organiser of the
CHI sHertogenbosch and Ad Aarts with his Four-in-Hand team.
The one-day seminar consisted of a theoretical part in the morning and course
building in the afternoon. The five course designers now have the status of
indoor course designer, qualified to build courses of the World Cup in the
2001/2002 season. If an FEI Course Designer who did not attend the indoor
seminar in Deurne will build a World Cup course, he must be assisted by one of
the five qualified participants of the course in Deurne, who will officiate as
Technical Delegate.
FEI EVENTING EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PAU
(FRA), from 11 to 14 October 2001
After over 30 years (1969 in Haras de Pin), France is proud to welcome back the
Eventing European Championships which will take place in
Pau-Pyrénées from 11th to 14th October 2001.
Pau-Pyrénées is the only International Eventing venue in the
South of France. The event, started in 1990 and a year later Pau hosted the
first International Three Day Event. The venue is located within the Sers
Racehorse Training Centre (the second biggest training facility in France)
which is managed by the "Société des Courses des
Pyrénées Atlantiques". Sers complex can count on a beautiful
arena and an exceptional location with all facilities: stabling, training
areas, cross country course, trade stand area and parkings, all situated in the
same area. The finest hotels are at 5 minutes, the International Airport is at
only 1 km.
The event is run by "Competitions Equestres Pau
Pyrénées" (CEPP ) and the professional company Centaure, led
by Babette Schily and Pascal Sayous who, since 1991, are actively involved in
the organization together with the institutional partners such as Pau' City
Council , the Region Authority, the National Stud (Haras Nationaux) and the
Société des Courses. The town of Pau and all other parties
involved provide strongsupport to the organization of the event and for this
reason the 2001 FEI Eventing European Championships will represent the greatest
equestrian event of the season in France. At the brand new congress centre
"Palais Beaumont" the French national veterinary congress will take
place during the European Championships with an expected attendance of over 500
equine specialists.

UPDATE ON IMPORTATION OF HORSES FROM THE EU INTO
AUSTRALIA
The Australian Veterinary Authorities (AQIS) have reviewed their earlier
decision to stop import of horses from EU (European Union) countries, which was
made during the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks. Import of EU horses was
again permitted as of May 17, under certain conditions. The conditions relate
mostly to a 3-week Pre-Export Quarantine (PEQ), inspection by an AQIS
veterinarian and cleaning/disinfection of the horses and vehicles utilised.
Since England, Scotland and Wales are not yet considered as free from FMD, the
PEQ procedure for horses from that area would have to be completed in an FMD
free country.
