BHS Root Out Ragwort Week
21-29 July 2001 |
It is that time of year again when verges and
waste ground are covered in tall yellow flowers which may look pretty, but the
sight will chill the heart of every horse owner and spells death to horses and
cattle. The British Horse Society is once again running Root Out Ragwort Week
to raise awareness of the dangers of this poisonous weed and the importance of
stopping it from seeding at all costs.
As part of Root Out Ragwort Week this year, the
BHS is calling on everyone to report infestations of the plant to their local
paper so that the culprits who allow this noxious weed to spread can be
named and shamed.
Ragwort is poisonous to all livestock, and humans
too, so gloves should always be worn when pulling it. It is listed as an
injurious weed under the Weeds Act 1959 which makes it an offence not to comply
with clearance notices.

Charles Owen & Company are delighted to
announce their Product Support of the British Pony Three Day Eventing Squad.
The final squad will be named after the Final Selection Trial on 1st July.
Despite the decimation of the season due to FMD, the Squad have refused to
admit defeat despite a lack of funding and approached Charles Owen in late May.
An immediate and positive swift response has enabled everyone involved to
concentrate on preparations. |
During the past three and a half years Charles
Owen have worked closely with leading international riders. The Sponsorship of
the Pony Championship Squad is a further initiative enabling them to invest
back into the future of the sport. The prospective international stars of the
future are frequently found in these ranks, having progressed and learnt
through the invaluable Pony Club Organisation.
Roy Burek M.D. commented The Pony Club and
British Eventing does such an important job securing and encouraging talented
young up and coming riders in the early stages of their careers. We are pleased
to be able to support both Organisations through this sponsorship. It is
refreshing to be involved with the Junior ranks at such a significant
International level. We now support from the grass roots level of equestrianism
right through to the highest Senior levels.

LSU Equine Health Studies Program Launches Stallion Service
Auction to Expand Intensive Care Unit
The Equine Health Studies Program (EHSP) in the
LSU School of Veterinary Medicine will launch its first annual multiple-breed
Stallion Service Auction in September to generate funds for expansion of the
Equine Intensive Care Unit in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics.
The new intensive care unit, projected to cost
$845,000, will be expanded from a two-stall facility to a ten-stall facility,
better meeting the rising demand from the expanding Louisiana horse industry.
"The equine case load at the veterinary school has increased approximately
15 percent annually since 1990, with 20 to 25 percent of the admitted horses
requiring emergency and critical care services," explained Dr. Rustin
Moore, EHSP director. The new unit will include four stalls specially designed
for critically ill neonatal foals and their dams, and one stall with padded
walls and an overhead hoist for horses with severe neurologic or
musculoskeletal disease. The other 6 stalls will be equipped to accommodate
critically ill and injured adult horses requiring advanced emergency and
critical care veterinary services. The equine program has currently raised
$450,000 through fund-raising events and charitable gifts.

New Foundation Formed To Aid Olympic Dressage Competitors
Marietta, GA- The Applewood Foundation
for Excellence in Dressage was recently formed in Marietta, Georgia, to support
Olympic level dressage riders in a quest to develop top horse and rider
combinations for the USA Olympic Dressage team.
The inspiration to develop the tax-exempt charitable (501(c)3) foundation was
Olympian, Michelle Gibson. Gibson, a US bronze medallist in the 1996 Olympics,
has trained at Applewood Farm in Georgia since she returned form Europe in
1992. "We have seen how difficult is was in 1996 for Michelle to raise the
necessary monies to achieve success. We were discouraged by the limited avenues
for financial support of such an expensive sport." says Brad Thatcher,
owner of Applewood Farm and Foundation trustee.

Mounted Sheriff Posse Ride the
Badlands in Dunn
by Deb Kulish - Dunn County Herald |
Six members of the Todd County's Mounted Sheriff's
Posse of Long Prairie, MN have experienced the beauty of the badlands in Dunn
County at Naard Creek Ranch this past week. Roger Deering, Kevin and Becky
Boyer, Donna Boyer, Raymond Hendershot, and Laureen Carstonsen and their horses
have been staying at the Naard Creek Cabin, owned by Harry and Maureen Olson of
Killdeer, ND.
This dedicated group of volunteers are used to
wooded areas back home in Minnesota. They wanted to experience some different
riding opportunities for their horses and themselves while on vacation. Thus,
Dunn County was their choice.
As a group; they have been to other state parks in
Wyoming and South Dakota but never North Dakota. The group is impressed with
the terrain of Dunn County. Six years ago Laureen rode horse in Medora in the
state park and was interested in coming back this way.

Devon, As in Heaven
by Susanne Connors
The Devon Horse Show open jumper division was your classic cocktail party. Some
arrived fashionably late, others left early, as always some spouses (horses)
were unable to attend, but by Thursday evening Devon was in full swing. At any
rate, history was made.
The Grand Prix course designed by Conrad Homfeld
was no tea party, by any standard. A quick aside about the pulse of the week:
although Devon is one of the best run shows in the country, with a
knowledgeable and enthusiastic crowd and a great venue, the issue of prize
money was an issue. Show President Leonard King has his Development Committee
at work for next year, and already has an extra $25,000 for next years' Grand
Prix. That elevates the 2002 stakes well into buttled hors d'ouerves territory
at $75,000! Before an elbow-to-elbow crowd, the 2001 Devon Grand Prix was one
of the best in anyone's memory.

Campaign For Healthy Horses
A horse of your own is great fun and can be a
uniquely rewarding experience, so long as the horse is kept happy and healthy.
This is the message that will be highlighted during the first Equine Welfare
Week, from 8th to 16th September, sponsored by Fort Dodge
Animal Health.
The week is part of the Jeep National Riding
Festival, which is already doing a great deal to boost riding with school
visits and the famous mechanical horse, Trigger. An increasing number of people
are becoming horse owners for the first time and Welfare Week aims to raise
awareness of what it takes to keep a horse and to encourage responsible horse
ownership. Incidences of neglect are distressing for all concerned and so often
occur through lack of knowledge. Information leaflets will be distributed
throughout the country during Welfare Week to provide basic information on
horse care and where to get further help. Subjects covered include feeding,
shelter, farriery, worming and veterinary care. The leaflets, together with a
more detailed booklet covering all aspects of equine care will be available at
the various events being held as part of the Jeep National Riding Festival.

Grand Prix -- Takes First And Second in $50,000 Cosequin Grand at HITS Tahoe
I |
MINDEN, NEVADA (July 1, 2001)-Ashlee Bond, 16, of
Hidden Hills, California, made her Grand Prix debut today, and won the $50,000
Cosequin® Grand Prix with Lapaloupe, besting a field of 21 horses. Bond
also placed second with Pablo. As the owner/rider of both horses, Bond took
home $15,000 for first place and $11,000 for second place. Adding to the
family's success today, Steve Bond, Ashlee's father, placed sixth on his
Fabius, earning $2,500.
"The horse Pablo has done
the Grand Prix classes before, but never with me," said Ashlee. "I've
only been riding him for three months. He was my dad's horse-he gave him to me.
The other one, Lapaloupe, is 14, and I've had him for about three years. We
never thought he could do the Grand Prix, but I always told my dad that he
could. So finally we [said] okay, and he won it. So it feels really good."

He brought her daughter to life.
Dan is an equine communications therapist, a horse whisperer, and helps

"A lot of the kids have a real tough time
