Sandy Ferrell And Indian Summer Win Reg. First Yr. Green Working Hunter Ch., Section B
Ken Smith And Carmen Win Regular Working Hunter Championship

WELLINGTON, FL - February 19, 2004 - The fourth week of the 32nd Winter Equestrian
Festival in Wellington, Florida, showcases hunter horses and riders for five days, February 18-22, in the Florida Classic/World Champion Hunter Rider Spectacular. The highlight of the week is the annual American Hunter-Jumper Foundation Hunter Classic Spectacular of Palm Beach featured under the lights in the Internationale Arena from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Saturday, February 21 at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club. The finale to the week is a Grand Prix show jumping event on Sunday, February 22, starting at 1:00 pm - the $60,000 Idle Dice Classic, presented by Palm Beach Post, a Preliminary Competition for the World Cup Final. Hunter competition kicked off on Wednesday, February 18 with the first rounds of competition for the Championships in First Year Green, Second Year Green, Green Conformation, Regular Conformation, and Regular Working Hunters.

Scott Stewart And Chopard Win Regular Conformation Hunter Championship
Scott Stewart, 39, of Flemington, NJ, and Wellington, FL, riding Chopard for owner Krista Weisman, won the Regular Conformation Hunter Championship after competing in five classes over two days, starting out with two victories in over fences classes. "He was wonderful yesterday out in the field when all the other horses were being a little fresh because of the weather," said Stewart, noting the chilly, breezy conditions that did not prevail in today's windless and sunny competition. "He went great and he won both yesterday with good scores."

Today in the first of two over fences classes Chopard placed tenth. "He didn't have a great first round," Stewart admitted, "But then the second round was really good so he ended up second." Stewart and Chopard placed fifth in the Under Saddle class to clinch the Championship. "But it was close," Stewart pointed out. "We were only champion by a point. He was good so hopefully he'll be good for Saturday night."

Stewart chalked up this Championship win to Chopard's performance over fences. "Yesterday he went super. He was perfect. He's the best out there. He's a great horse." Stewart has been riding the nine-year-old Bavarian gelding for three years.

Addison Phillips riding her own Tinsel Town earned the Reserve Regular Conformation Hunter.

Jimmy Torano And Rising Sun Win Reg. First Yr. Green Working Hunter Ch, Section A
Sandy Ferrell And Indian Summer Win Reg. First Yr. Green Working Hunter Ch, Section B
Jimmy Torano, 38, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, rode Rising Sun for owner Kendall Bate to the First Year Green Working Hunter Championship, Section A. Sandy Ferrell riding Indian Summer for Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Caristo won the First Year Green Working Hunter Championship, Section B.

Geoff Teall, 43, of Wellington, Florida, trains Rising Sun and also coaches the horse's owner, Kendall, who is a junior rider.

"That's one of the nicest horses I've ever had," said Teall. "That's the sweetest, trying-est, kindest horse. Every day he tries to do whatever you want. That's so rare."

Rising Sun is a seven-year-old, chestnut, Dutch gelding by Kojak that Teall imported two years ago from Jan Broek in Holland. Last year Rising Sun showed at WEF as a Pre-Green horse and won that division. Jimmy Torano took over the ride and started out the first week of this year's WEF as First Year Green Champion. Rising Sun is stabled and in training at Teall's Montoga Inc. barn. "I ride him and prepare him and teach my junior rider Kendall Bate," explained Teall, and added with a laugh, "Then Jimmy swoops in and gets all the blue ribbons!"

In two days' of competition, Rising Sun competed in four over fences classes and placed first, second, third and fourth. Teall decided not to contest the hack, figuring they had enough points to secure the championship. "We gambled and won for a change," he grinned. Teall calls Rising Sun "a real unusual combination. He's a beautiful horse. He has a beautiful gallop and he's an outstanding jumper. That's what you see when you watch him, but his best feature is that he has a great brain. I can't say enough good things about him." Rising Sun will compete in First Year classes and also campaign in the small junior hunters with his owner. "It's Kendall's last junior year," explained Teall. "Then he'll be sold at the end of the year."

Morgan Thomas riding MVP for owner Kimberly Wang earned the Reserve First Year Green Working Hunter, Section A.

Tammy Provost riding Tommy Bahama for owner Laurie B. Stevens was named Reserve First Year Green Working Hunter, Section B.

Ken Smith And Carmen Win Regular Working Hunter Championship
For the second week in a row, Ken Smith, 36, of Wellington, Florida, rode Carmen for owner Millridge LLC, to the Regular Working Hunter Championship. Carmen is a 10-year-old, 15.3-hand, bay Oldenburg mare that Smith has had the ride on since October 2003. The duo competed in four over fences classes and one Under Saddle class over two days. "She had the best round of her life yesterday until the last jump," said Smith. "She just touched the back rail and had the last jump down unfortunately. She jumped so high and so nice, she just made a little bit of an error at the last jump. It was too bad." That error put them out of the ribbons, but Carmen rallied in the Internationale Arena and won her second class yesterday with an 89 average.

Competition for the Regular Working started with Under Saddle today, and Carmen and Smith placed third. "There was a lot of pressure to have two solid rounds over jumps today," Smith noted. "She went really nice." Carmen scored 89 in the first class and placed second, and then scored a 90 in the second round and won the class. "Luckily today she was really on her game," said Smith. "She went really even and smooth and jumped great. She was really, really consistent." Smith is looking forward to competing in the AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular on Saturday night.

Sandy Ferrell riding Fiddlers Bridge for owner Stephanie Riggio earned the Reserve Regular Working Hunter.
