BHS Proposes National Livery Yard Plan

A scheme to be launched shortly will help livery yard owners to attract new business. The British Horse Society is currently putting the finishing touches to The British Horse Society Livery Yard Approval Scheme from which a list of recognised businesses will be available nationally.

DEFRA minister Elliot Morley recently highlighted the fact that while establishments boarding dogs and cats had to be licensed, livery yards did not, and he is suggesting that this anomaly is eradicated in the proposed "modernisation" of the Protection of Animals Act.

"While the Society's scheme does not demand legislation, it will establish standards that will need to be met by member businesses," said BHS chief executive Kay Driver. "It will also provide the basis for a national register which will be available to people seeking livery facilities."

The initiative is scheduled to be announced in July, and will run alongside the Society's established and successful Riding School Approvals scheme. It is supported by the British Equine Veterinary Association, the International League for the Protection of Horses and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, all of whom are involved in its preparation. Sponsors are South Essex Insurance Brokers, Intervet and Merial Animal Health
