THE BORDERS FESTIVAL OF THE HORSE Scottish Borders, UK 18th - 29th May 2002 The Scottish Borders is rightly known as Scotland's Horse Country, its proud riding traditions maintained by the Border towns in their annual Common Ridings when cavalcades of horses ride the boundaries of the common land, and also in the wide range of equestrian businesses and attractions located in this scenic and unspoilt region. To showcase and celebrate the range of equestrian activities and attractions in the Scottish Borders, the British Horse Society (Borders) is organising a Festival of the Horse to take place from 18th - 29th May next year. The programme will encompass the Floors Castle Horse Trials and a race meeting at Kelso as well as guided rides, competitions, have-a-go sessions and demonstrations covering the whole range of equestrian activities, stud visits and open days, together with themed entertainment and social events. The highlight will be an Equestrian Extravaganza family day at Springwood Park showground in Kelso on Saturday 25th May 2002. The Borders region has been affected by foot and mouth disease this year and equestrian businesses have suffered from the effect of restrictions and event cancellations. It is hoped that this new festival will provide a welcome boost to the industry as it recovers from this setback and help to raise the profile of what the area can offer - both to the experienced rider and to the interested beginner. Anyone interested in visiting the Borders to participate in the festival is encouraged to visit the Scottish Borders Tourist Board's website www.scot-borders.co.uk . The region offers a number of options for horse and rider accommodation and is easily accessible from Newcastle, Carlisle, Edinburgh or Glasgow. Full details of the festival will be published in due course on the British Horse Society (Scotland) website www.bhs.org.uk but anyone interested in the festival can contact Anne Fraser on 01835 863020 or e-mail Abfraser@btinternet.com |
