Animal
Lovers Urged to Participate in EC Online Consultation
|
The
UK's leading international equine welfare charity is calling on
all animal lovers to participate in a European Commission online
consultation on animal transportation, to be held from 2-16 December.
For many years the ILPH (International League for the Protection
of Horses) has been lobbying the EC and governments both at home
and abroad to improve the
conditions endured by horses and donkeys during their long distance
transport into Europe for slaughter.
Comments Keith Meldum, ILPH European Adviser, "We are delighted
that the Commission has set up the online consultation to allow
EU citizens to participate in
the decision making process. This is indeed an encouraging proactive
response to the thousands of letters they have received on the issue
of animal welfare during
transport.
"It is really good news and shows just how seriously Commissioner
Byrne is taking the transportation issue. I'm sure that the online
debate will serve to highlight the
overwhelming public support for stopping the long distance transport
of animals for slaughter altogether."
The ILPH is asking everybody who is concerned about the long distant
transport of any animals for slaughter, whether horses in Europe
or British lambs and sheep from the UK to southern Europe to log
on to http://europa.eu.int/comm/food/fs/aw/aw_transport_en.html
to have their say between 2 and 16 December.
