British
Horse Society Ragwort Bill enters final stage
Fears
that conservations groups were prepared to wreck the
British Horse Society (BHS) initiated Ragwort Control
Bill thankfully proved unfounded in the House of Lords
late last night (12 November). Amendments tabled prior
to Report Stage were withdrawn during debate, enabling
the Bill to move one stage closer to becoming law and
provide for a code of practice with evidential status. |
Amendment
1: Page 1, Line 5, leave out 'prevent the spread of' and
insert 'reduce the risk of horses dying from eating [Ragwort]'
tabled by the Lord Bishop of Hereford and in particular,
Amendment 2: Leave out Clause 1, tabled by Lord Brooke of
Sutton Mandeville would, if accepted, have effectively wrecked
the Bill at almost the last stage. The amendments reflected
concerns of the Wildlife & Countryside Link (Link),
an umbrella group of 32 member organisations, on the effect
a code of practice to control Ragwort would have on the
plant's ecological status.

New
Release - Dressage For Jumping With Richard Davison,
John and Robert Whitaker
Dressage
for Jumping is an innovative training video in which
international dressage rider and double Olympian, Richard
Davison, is joined by show jumping legend John Whitaker
and his son Robert. The result is 90 minutes of fascinating
and comprehensive instruction on the flat and over jumps
as Richard's dressage expertise is moulded with the
Whitakers' jumping prowess.
During the programme, Richard takes viewers through
the training session, covering suppleness, yielding
to the leg and half halt. He is joined by John Whitaker
to assess the young jumping horse and together they
tackle some common problems. With John and Robert Whitaker,
Richard looks at seeing a stride including arriving
correctly at take-off, shortening and lengthening on
the flat and between jumps before moving on to look
at jumping a course. Finally there are advanced exercises
on the flat to perfect the turn and jumping against
the clock.

Full Length Riding Coat From Gumleaf
Gumleaf
has launched the Carlisle full length riding coat which
offers total protection whatever the weather.
“This
coat is made in the UK on the lines of an Australian
stock coat in a lightweight and supple dark brown wax,”
says Gumleaf founder Alistair Paterson, who farms 1,000
acres in Norfolk.
“Cotton
lined with a polyester drip band, leg straps and saddle
gusset are standard and the coat can be snapped around
the legs to convert to leggings in severe conditions.”
Both
breathable and waterproof the Carlisle has an oiled
nubuck padded leather collar and elbow patches and the
cape can be removed to give a more “traditional
English appearance”. The coat also benefits from
hand warmer pockets for added user comfort.

Sheehy's
Mayfly Lands Grand Prix on Debut
Last
weekend saw the second leg take place of the Inaugural
Leinster Indoor Show-jumping Championship Series. This
time it was the ponies turn to take centre stage in
the Kathleen Flannelly Memorial Arena at Kill International
Equestrian Centre. With over 650 pre-entries made from
all round the country for the show it promised to be
busy weekend, with a lot of good jumping in store as
the five members of the European Bronze Medal winning
team were competing. |
Saturday
saw competitors ease into the groove and familiarise themselves
and their ponies to the impressive new complex with customary
D, CD and ABC classes for each height categories. Familiar
faces who popped up in the winning line up on a number of
occasions on Saturday morning in the 128cms classes included
Joseph Sweeney (Theo Lite and Rags to Riches), Gerard Clarke
(Jo's Dancer and Drishogue Brandy), Bertram Allen (She's
Pretty) and Lucy Bowler (She's Pretty). However, the 128
that caught the eye was the impressive combination of Daniel
Mullins and I'm Otto who won the 128cms ABC with over two
seconds to spare from Jenny Brennan taking both second and
third on Sprinter's Magic and Woodlouse respectively.

Horse Society comments on passport regulations
The
British Horse Society, having studied the finalised
Horse Passports (England) Regulations 2003 published
by Defra yesterday, has the following comment to make.
The
BHS is pleased that at long last the equestrian world
has sight of the regulations relating to horse passports,
which come into force on 30 November. It welcomes the
fact that several issues raised by equine organisations
have been accepted by Defra and implemented in the final
document, particularly in relation to extending the
deadline six months to 30 June 2004 and the movement
of foals when the dam is moved to or from stud.

Forces Extra Day For Trailblazers Championships
The
championship meeting for the 2004 South Essex Insurance
Brokers/PSOA Trailblazer series has been extended to four
days (August 5-8)
"This
will be the fourth year of the series, and the numbers going
forward to the final have steadily increased," said
Permanent Show Organiser Association (PSOA) chairman Norman
Bargh. "Last year about 58,000 riders competed in first
rounds, from which about 1,950 qualified for the three day
final - which left us very tight for time."
In
the 2003-2004 series, a total of 44 PSOA centres - six more
than in the previous year - are holding first round showjumping
and dressage qualifiers and rider registrations are up by
about 800.

North
American League Finals Cap Off Exciting 2003 Season
Annville,
PA—November 4, 2003—The 2003 North American League
(NAL) Finals capped off an exciting NAL season when they
were held at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg.
The
Finals had an exciting start with Jennifer Waxman winning
the NAL Pony Jumper Final on opening day at the riding her
bay mare, Just Have Fun. The pair put in a faultless performance
to edge out the competition in a time of 29.448 seconds.
Julianna Fischer and Indigo came in second with a double
clear in a time of 30.729. Caroline Woods on Longacre Lavender
just missed the Reserve spot to finish in third with a time
of 30.869.
The
field of 21 yielded eight for the jump-off with the first
seven going clear and very little time separating the top
two. The pressure was on for Waxman who, as the top qualifier,
was the last to go in the first round, which put her in
the final slot for the jump-off.

Polish
Rider Andrzej Pasek wins first leg of FEI Eventing
World Cup's new season at Nichelino (ITA)
Poland's
Andrzej Pasek, 29, won the opening leg of the FEI
Eventing World Cup's second season riding the 9-year
old chestnut gelding Redan (owned by Erika Ratti).
Despite the heavy rain, deep mud and generally appalling
weather conditions, he took the lead from the very
beginning scoring a remarkable 39.10 points (73.91%)
after Dressage. He went clear in Jumping and had neither
fence nor time penalties in the Cross Country. This
performance is all the more remarkable as Pasek placed
2nd in the two-star event riding Bujwid delle Ombre.
Andrzej, who currently trains in Italy preparing for
next year's Olympic Games in Athens, is a regular
visitor at Nichelino, where he competed last year
placing 18th in the World Cup class and winning the

The
Fjord Horse
Of all the modern equine breeds, the Norwegian Fjord
horse bears the most striking resemblance to the Przewalski
horse, also known as the Asiatic wild horse of the Ice
Age, which has a very strong resemblance to primitive
cave drawings that have been found in a number of places
around the world. Existing in the wild only in the western
area of the Gobi Desert, it was generally thought to
be extinct, until a herd was discovered by a Russian
explorer, Colonel N. M. Prezwalski (1839-1888), in the
latter part of the nineteenth century
The Norwegian Fjord horse retains much of its ancestor's
primitive vigour, as well as the uniform dun coat colour.
The latter is accompanied by an eel stripe running from
the forelock to the tip of the tail, and sometimes by
zebra bars on the legs. The mane and tail are usually
lighter in colour, being almost silver.
