Anky & Sjef On Video
Equestrian Vision are delighted to announce the release of "Anky - Her Winning Formula", a video programme based on the "Masters Tour" from Addington Equestrian Centre In February.
Hosted by Richard Davison this lecture demonstration really lived up to its billing and we filmed the evening with four cameras to produce a quality programme.
Anky and Sjef start off by giving tips on what they are looking for in the ideal young dressage horse and Anky then rides a 5 year old mare. She follows this by giving a lesson to one of her pupils and finishes by riding the horse herself.

In the second half Richard Davison interviews the two stars and Anky recalls many of the magical moments with her beloved Bonfire. The evening concludes with Anky riding one of her up and coming stars under the watchful eye of Sjef and in this final session Anky demonstrates all her riding skills. Said produces Jamie Hawksfield "They are the most successful team in dressage today and to have the opportunity to learn from them both is unique. On the night they were brilliant and they really captivated the capacity audience".

Preliminary Results Of Breath Gas Study: Can high starch diets cause gas colic?
by S. Pratt, Dr. J. S. Weese, M. Anderson and A. Lowe
Dietary starch is poorly digested by the equine small intestine. Rapid fermentation of starch may lead to increased production of volatile fatty acids, methane and hydrogen. Excessive production of these compounds may cause digestive upset in the horse. Methane and hydrogen gasses are either expelled as flatus or absorbed and expired via the lungs. It is possible to collect and analyze the composition of these breath gasses.
This study was conducted to determine if dietary starch had an effect on breath gasses in the horse.

Mosquitoes Away
The flight was delayed, the children were fractious, the coach driver belonged in a formula one car and the hotel’s nowhere near where it’s meant to be, but hey - who cares? You’re unpacked, you’re on holiday, it’s lovely and warm and at last you can relax . . . and then you hear that horrid buzzing sound and, before you can move, the dreaded Mosquito has bitten.

I dare say we’ve all been there and we’ve tried all sorts of repellents, layering the stuff on in the vain hope that it’ll scare the little blighters off, but does it? Does it heck! But now there’s a new product which really will give those annoying insects the fright of their lives, and it’s called, appropriately enough, Mosquitoes Away!
The secret of Mosquitoes Away is that it’s based on Neem Oil blended with carefully selected natural ingredients – there are no chemicals, preservatives or harmful additives whatsoever – so what you put on your skin it totally natural. And you don’t need handfuls of the stuff, either – a reasonable dab of Mosquitoes Away really does go a long way.
The Neem tree which gives the oil grows on the Indian sub-continent and its medicinal properties have been known for centuries. Locals often refer to it as the village pharmacy because of its healing action for skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, rashes and acne. Neem also has very powerful tick, parasite and insect repellent properties - researchers are now focusing on the use of Neem as a totally organic pesticide and insecticide.

He will say: "Countries and continents need to co-operate if they are to protect themselves against diseases like foot and mouth in future. Diseases like this know no boundaries.
"It is important that predictive modelling and surveillance is used to provide a detailed and up-to-date picture of infectious diseases around the globe as they occur and develop. It is vital that there is co-ordination with the OIE* and other bodies so that we are not caught off guard again."

Saddle Pilgrims of the Long Riders' Guild
by Sharon Muir Watson
A young Frenchwoman, Laura Bougault, has just set out on horseback to follow her dream. She will face isolation, discomfort, fear and dangers unknown and at some low point, she will question her motives and search for answers deep within her soul. If successful, she will be the first woman to ride solo across the African continent.
Equestrian travel is not a modern trend restricted to people with a ‘horsey’ background. In 1925, Swiss school teacher and inexperienced horseman, Aime Tschiffely, bought two middle-aged, unbroken wild horses from a Patagonian Indian in South America. People thought him a lunatic doomed to failure, until he rode them 16,000km from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Washington D.C. In an incredible adventure lasting two and a half years, Aime battled hostile natives, bureaucrats, landslides, rope bridges and vampire bats. He survived, and fell in love with his Criollo horses (wild descendants of horses imported from Spain 450 years ago).
horse
Jean-Claude Cazade and Pascale Franconie return to France in the Winter of 1984.
Whether inspired by the likes of Tschiffely or their own desire for adventure, people have undertaken equestrian journeys on every continent including Antarctica, where ninenteen Russian/Siberian ponies undertook a sled journey. Sadly, none of these ponies survived the expedition as they became trapped on an ice floe and were eaten by killer whales.
SADDLE PILGRIMS
In 1994, a small band of equestrian travellers from many different countries and walks of life, discovered they had much in common. Their adventure may have begun as a ‘horseback holiday’, but somewhere along the way, the destination lost its importance and the journey itself became a sacred, life-changing experience. They had become ‘saddle pilgrims’ and forged a primeval bond of dependance and love with their horses.
They formed ‘The Long Riders’ Guild’, an international organisation with only one qualification for membership; a continuous ride of at least 1,000 miles (1,600 km).
Several Australians have become members, including Steve Nott, who rode 18,000km around our continent. The Guild has recently assisted Jacqui Knight, who rode the length of New Zealand, in publishing a book about her epic ride.

The oldest member is George Patterson (now 81), who rode across Tibet in 1946 and rescued the Dalai Lama from invading forces. The youngest riders were Bud and Temple Abernathy, who rode from Oklahoma to New York in 1910, then right across America from New York to San Francisco in 1911. They were only 9 and 5 years old when they began the first of their unchaperoned journeys!
