Carrie & Hallo Dandy
MBE For Founder Of Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre
THE founder of the original organisation that pioneered the welfare of retired racehorses said she felt deeply privileged to have been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours today (SATURDAY 14 JUNE).
Formby-born Carrie Humble is the Director of the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre in Lancashire - the first charity in Europe dedicated to the welfare, rehabilitation and re-homing of thoroughbred former racehorses.
The 52-year-old received an MBE for her contribution to the welfare of retired racehorses.
The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre, which stages its annual open day on Sunday 22 June, was founded by her 12 years ago.
Carrie Humble said: "I am deeply privileged to receive this honour and thank all the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre's many supporters and those who believe in our work for the welfare of former racehorses. I couldn't have done this alone for I am only as good as my team. The award of this MBE is a fantastic achievement for all of us. I am most grateful."
She conceived of the idea of the centre in 1991 while preparing thoroughbred stock for a friend's father in the UK after returning from 17 years in the United States.
Since achieving charitable status in 1993 the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre has become widely recognised and respected as the leading organisation in the field of racehorse rehabilitation and Carrie is regarded as the pioneer of the movement.

Tim Capps, Author Of Spectacular Bid Biography Reflects On Horse's Career
LEXINGTON, KY— Timothy T. Capps, author of the book “Spectacular Bid,” a biography about renowned race horse Spectacular Bid in the Thoroughbred Legends’ series of fine books published by Eclipse Press, reflected on the horse’s career and offered his thoughts on Spectacular Bid’s place among modern great racehorses. Spectacular Bid died of an apparent heart attack Tuesday at Dr. Jonathan Davis' Milfer Farm near Unadilla, N.Y. In Spectacular Bid, Capps details the heart-breaking Triple Crown run of Spectacular Bid who could have achieved racing immortality were it not for a loose safety pin in his stall. Spectacular Bid had already won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and looked to be a sure thing in the Belmont Stakes until he stepped on the fateful safety pin prior to the race and ended up third.

Samsung Super League News - France Still Lead The Way.......
The French still head the leaderboard as the Samsung Super League series moves to the halfway stage in Aachen next week, but their lead has narrowed considerably as the Irish pile on the pressure after their superb victory in St Gallen 12 days ago.
The league table has almost divided itself in two – with France, Ireland, Great Britain and Germany battling it out at the top while Sweden, Belgium, Italy and Holland struggle to survive at the bottom end.
Aachen, of course, is the one they all want to win. The status of this equestrian fixture is second to none and victory here is as sweet as it gets. With a budget of 8.5m Euro it has been voted the World’s Best Outdoor Event by international riders for the last 15 years. The arena, one of the biggest in the world with a capacity for 40,000 spectators, encloses a spectacular range of obstacles including hedges, ditches and the famous lake so horses must be particularly brave, and experience counts for a great deal when riding those fences.

And of course it is an event steeped in tradition. So many of the great names in show jumping are linked to this arena including Hans Gunther Winkler and the wonderful mare Halla, the legendary Raimondo d’Inzeo, Paul Schockemohle and Gerd Wiltfang to name just a few. It has witnessed many great occasions during it’s 50 years and next Friday’s Samsung Super League competition promises to be one of those.

FEI Eventing World Cup News
Nick Roe (AUS), riding the 11-year old gelding Wondaree Hooley Dooley, won the tenth leg of the FEI Eventing World Cup held at Werribee Park (AUS) from 7 to 9 June. The pair completed one of only two clear Jumping rounds and finished convincing winners with a final score of 55.1 points, nearly 10 points ahead of their nearest rival. Roe had placed 6th after the Dressage test with 51.1 points (65.94%) and 3rd after the Cross Country where he had earned four penalties for exceeding the time allowed.

The only other clear round went to Michael Baker and his 14-year old gelding G.S. Chevalier, which moved them from 8th to runner up position with a final score of 64.3 points.
The third place went to 1996 Olympic Team Champion Wendy Schaeffer on Sun Shades. Schaeffer, who had placed 2nd after Dressage (41.5 points - 72.32%), performed the competition's best Cross Country scoring no penalties. This was all the more remarkable as she had initially been eliminated from Cross Country for allegedly taking out a flag. She was reinstated after her appeal backed by video evidence had been upheld. The pair were relegated to the 3rd position with a final score of 65.5 points after knocking down six rails during the Jumping test.

Charity saves mare and foal from certain death

An emaciated mare, who was barely able to stand and her newly born foal have been saved from certain death by The Blue Cross animal welfare charity.
Marie Claire, an emaciated, lice-ridden and worm-infested mare had unexpectedly just given birth in a puddle to a tiny foal when her owner decided that both mother and daughter should be shot. The attending vet tipped off the local Blue Cross centre and Manager Liz Grant rushed to the scene and took both mare and filly foal to the safety of The Blue Cross small animal and equine adoption centre in Northiam, West Sussex.
The mare, estimated to be about seven-years-old, was in such a weak state, with severely protruding bones, hairless skin and extremely overgrown feet, that it seemed unlikely she or the foal, named Sesame, would survive. Fortunately the expertise and round-the-clock care given by staff at The Blue Cross, together with Marie Claire’s determination to feed her small foal have enabled them to begin the slow process of recovery. Centre staff slept in the stable alongside Marie Claire and Sesame keeping watch over their precarious condition.

New distance learning courses in Equine Behaviour and Welfare
The Open College of Equine Studies, an international leader in equine distance learning, has launched a Foundation Degree (FD) and a BSc in Equine Behaviour and Welfare. Both are available on a flexible basis and will be of great benefit to students with full-time jobs or other commitments.
The role of the horse in western societies has altered in recent times and issues associated with behaviour and welfare, together with the ethics of certain production systems and types of use have become the subject of discussion and new research initiatives. The subject of animal behaviour and welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, with a strong focus on meeting the needs and optimising the management systems of farm livestock, companion animals and other captive species.

The courses are being managed by the highly qualified Dr Amanda Badnell-Waters, the college’s newly appointed Head of Equine Higher Education. Both courses provide a firm foundation in equine science with the development of additional specialist knowledge in the field of behaviour and welfare of particular relevance to the equine sector, but also applicable to other areas of animal science.
The FD is a new, modern higher education qualification, forming part of the national strategy to increase the number of employees qualified at the higher levels. There are no nationally set entry requirements for FDs – they are open to anyone with the ability to learn at a higher level. Upon completion of the FD students can opt to top-up to a full Honours Degree.

This pressure testing trial is the first independent study of its kind to have been carried out on why saddle pads work and their effectiveness against pressure when under the saddle.
The PI Associates/Polypads® Classic Single Polypad® was one of 10 scientifically tested saddle pads, ranging from a lambskin pad to a selection of well-known gel pads. The trial was overseen by Jan Hermkens of FSA pressure measurements, a recognised expert in the field of pressure measurements in saddle fittings and Henk Winkelman a biomechanics engineer and lecturer in professional equestrian training. The PolyPad® achieved an impressive second place in the average pressure exertion test, went on to score top marks in the crucial contact surface area pressure test and was ultimately voted ‘best buy’.

Newmarket Nights Begin With A Tribute To The Bee Gees
This year's Newmarket Nights, six evenings of horseracing followed by a live concert from a well-known group, start at Newmarket's July Racecourse on Friday, June 20, when A Tribute To The Bee Gees takes centre stage after an exciting six-race programme.
The Bee Gees performed as a group from an early age, gaining an Australian number one in 1966 with 'Spick And Speck', and enjoyed their heyday in the 1970s, reinforced by their role in the film 'Saturday Night Fever', which starred John Travolta. The movie's soundtrack featured six Bee Gees' songs, including the title track 'Stayin' Alive' and 'Jive Talkin''. The band produced hits over four decades.
Later during the summer, chart-topping Liberty X and Atomic Kitten appear at Newmarket for the first time. Liberty X will be on stage on Friday, July 25, while Atomic Kitten will perform on Friday, August 15. Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and Status Quo were two of last year's sell-out attractions and both these bands feature again on the 2003 roster.

BETA Voices Concern Over Hat Research
The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has hit out following a story in a national newspaper at the weekend that claims most riding hats 'fail to protect' their riders. This is simply not true.
The implication of by ENHAP (Equestrian New Helmet Assessment Programme) have been strongly refuted by BETA and leading riding hat manufacturers who feel the story will cause unnecessary fear and uncertainty over safety issues in the minds of the thousands of people who ride in the UK.

At all times, BETA encourages tests and trials aimed at making riding safer for all, but is seriously concerned about the claims and implications of the ENHAP results which are, at best, meaningless and, at worst, will cause greater rider confusion.
Despite numerous attempts to obtain representation on the working party that established the testing protocols, BETA as a representative of both the manufacturing and retail trade, was excluded. Indeed, the working party did not even attempt to seek any type of advice from manufacturers, who between them, have over 156 years of equestrian safety heritage. Manufacturers have also invested a considerable amount of money ensuring rider safety is to the highest of British standards through the BSI kitemark. The kitemark guarantees that hats have been produced to the stringent standards through a series of independent tests (this means, on average, one riding hat is tested every single working day of the year).

Show Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Smith Makes Debut Win At Ballivor
IN A JUMP-OFF almost entirely dominated by owner/riders, it was Peter Smith who won through in beautiful sunshine at Ballivor today (Sunday), taking <Zara's Pride> into First place in their debut 2003 Kerrygold Grand Prix Super League win. And with 15 points under his belt, Smith has now ousted both Lt. David O'Brien (14.5 points) and Cian O'Connor (13 points) from the Top Six in the Kerrygold rankings.
A Second place today by James Kernan on <Out of Touch> also catapulted him up the league table, where he now holds Fourth.
Shane Breen once again took Sixth in the Grand Prix on <Luandra>, as he had done last week at Mullingar, this time clocking up three faults in the second round with an unfortunate refusal at the second fence.

Clem McMahon is still comfortably leading the Kerrygold League rankings with a total of 35 points, but he will be vulnerable next weekend (June 14-15) as he has been called up for international duty at Hamina, Finalnd, and so will miss both the Armagh and Galway Grands Prix at home.

Pro Stepps partners with APHA for 2003 World Show
FORT WORTH, Texas-Pro Stepps, which produces products geared toward improving the appearance of horses, has agreed to partner with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) to put on the 2003 World Champion Paint Horse Show.

Pro Stepps, which has been in business for seven years, began with Paint Horses in mind. The very first line of horse care products was actually created for World Champion Paint Horse mare The Enchantress, according to Pro Stepps founder and owner Karen Stepp. Among the products designed for the Paint Horse were shampoos, conditioners and finishing sprays.
"This business began because of Paints," said Stepp, who owns five Paint Horses and is an APHA member. "I developed these products with a chemist because there was nothing out there I liked. Our first horses to use the products were Paints."
Pro Stepps provides products that are design to not only enhance a horse's appearance, but also to help provide the horse with healthy skin and hair. The products have been tested, formulated and modified throughout the years to become the highest quality horse-grooming products on the market, said Stepp.

The Revival of The Newport Jumping Derby is a No-Go
Wellington, Florida – June 6, 2003 – Negotiations between Peter de Savary of the Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Phelps Wilkes & Associates, Inc. concerning the revival of The Newport Jumping Derby have terminated. After much speculation and anticipation within the international show jumping community, Mason Phelps, Jr. recently announced that: “Sadly, after preliminary discussions, Carnegie Abbey and Phelps Wilkes had different visions about the Derby. In addition, certain constraints on property use within the Carnegie Abbey Club would make it difficult at best to go forward in the appropriate manner.”
The Newport Jumping Derby was founded by Mason Phelps, Jr. in 1976. Held each August at Mason’s ancestral estate, Glen Farms, in Newport from 1976 to 1988, the FEI-sanctioned Derby was the highlight of the Newport social season and was one of the most well-attended show jumping events of its time.
