ILPH Promotes Farriery Best Practice
ILPH Glenda Spooner Farm, Hoarwithy, near Hereford
The first Glenda Spooner Farm Farriery Competition held on Saturday 27 July attracted more than 20 competitors.
With that many entries competition was stiff and Judge for the day, Mr Mark Evans, Dip WCF, had a difficult job on his hands choosing the winners.

Ben Benson won the first class of the day, the Apprentice Shoe Making Class. He has had a spectacular year that has included winning the Royal Show National Champion Apprentice title. The Runner-up was Clayton Lowe from the Welsh Borders.
The Live Shoeing class was of a similarly high standard. Competitors had 60 minutes in which to fit two shoes (one front and one hind) onto impeccably behaved ILPH horses. The eventual winner was British Team Member Dave Smith from the Cotswolds. Elgin Harris from South Wales was Runner-up.
The prize for the Best Dressed Foot was awarded to Nick Sumner who lectures at the Hereford Farriery School.
The competition was organised by the Glenda Spooner Farm Farrier, Rodway Heathfield with help from his wife, Sarah, who kindly agreed to take on the role of entry secretary. Rodway, a member of the Hereford Farriers Club, was delighted with how the day went. "I think the day was a great success for all concerned. Our intention was to encourage as many farriers and apprentices as possible to come along, have a go, and enjoy the day. Not only did we succeed in this regard, we also had a very high standard of competition in both classes. I was especially pleased to see a high number of entries from fellow members of the Hereford Farriers Club," he says.

Krista Freundlich Wins Hampton Classic Derby Welcome Stake at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show
BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY— August 30, 2002 — Krista Freundlich of Locust, NJ, rode away the winner of the $7,500 Hampton Classic Derby Welcome Stake at the 27th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY.

Open to Junior riders age 18 and under and Amateur-Owner riders, Junior competitor Freundlich topped the field of 42 horse-and-rider combinations. Spectators waited until almost the very end to get their winner when Freundlich and her horse, Laurin, posted a clear round and crossed the finish line in a time of 72.56 seconds.
Freundlich, who trains with Frank Madden in Colts Neck, NJ, recently competed at the 2002 North American Young Riders’ Championships in Old Mill Creek, IL, with much success. Second place went to Andrew Ramsay of Oakland, CA, and Lisa, who clocked in at 74.17 seconds while New York’s Kristy McCormack placed third with Marga. McCormack’s original time of 72.30 seconds would have won the class, but a rail down at the eighth fence cost her a five-second time penalty.
The $7,5000 Hampton Classic Derby Welcome Stake acts as a qualifier for Sunday’s $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Derby. The top thirty riders advance to the Derby, where they will ride in the reverse order of their placing in the Stake, giving the advantage on Sunday to Freundlich.

USET Responds To Filing Of Arbritration by USA EquestrianGladstone, NJ—August 30, 2002— As it has repeatedly threatened, on August 29, 2002, USA Equestrian filed for arbitration against the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the United States Equestrian Team (USET) in an attempt to overturn the USOC Board’s decision regarding the equestrian NGB challenge.
The USET’s officers, with authorization from the USET Executive Committee, have determined that the best interests of equestrian sport and the USET require that a protective demand for arbitration be filed solely to preserve the USET’s rights to present evidence of its preparedness and willingness to assume the responsibilities of NGB should USAE’s status as NGB be revoked, as recommended by the USOC. Tropical Rider is known for designing innovative performance apparel for serious equestrian athletes. They are pleased to announce the creation and release of The Jane Savoie Collection, a line of high quality athletic breeches. Ms. Savoie worked with Tropical Rider to develop the breeches to her high standards. "I have made it a policy that I don't just endorse things for the sake of endorsing, " Ms. Savoie said. "I have to really believe in the product before I put my name on it."
Ms. Savoie was the reserve rider for the Barcelona Olympics, has trained nine USDF Horse of the Year Champions and three USDF National Freestyle Champions. She is equally well known as the author of three best selling equestrian books including That Winning Feeling! and Cross Train Your Horse, and for producing popular tapes and videos.

Maggie Jayne Struts the Catwalk in the CK Equitation Championship at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show
BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY— August 29, 2002 — Style was the main focus as the $10,000 Calvin Klein Equitation Championship, Phase One, took to the grand prix ring at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show.
For riders aged 14-21, the first phase of this prestigious class was held on Thursday with Maggie Jayne of West Palm Beach, FL, topping the 39-entry field. Jayne’s mount, Grappa, is no stranger to the $10,000 CK Equitation Championship, having won in 2001 for Canadian Brian Walker and in 1998 for Sarah B. Willeman, who still owns the Hanoverian gelding.
Riders are judged on their riding style as they negotiate fences set at heights ranging from 3’6” to 3’9”. Only the top ten riders following Thursday’s opening phase advance to the second phase to be held Saturday morning. The winner is determined by combining the scores from both phases of competition. Unique to this class is that it is the trainers of the riders who are recognized. On Saturday, the trainer of the winning rider will be awarded a trophy and $2,500, the winner’s portion of the $10,000 prize money.
In other show jumping action at the Hampton Classic, it was the battle of the local riders in the $5,000 Open Jumper Stake. Southampton’s Ramiro Quintana riding Maria Bonita edged Bridgehampton’s Laura Bowery, who was aboard Gandini Sky Boy, for the win. The two local riders beat out Sydney Olympian Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, who finished third with Joyous and Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL, who placed fourth riding Gardenio.

Demand For Arbitration Made: USA Equestrian Responds To Formal Complaint
USA Equestrian, the National Equestrian Federation, announced today that a formal demand for arbitration has been made with the American Arbitration Association, relating to a recent United States Olympic Committee ruling on its status as the sport's national governing body. The USOC board of directors affirmed its hearing panel report on the matter in early August, and under federal law, a demand for binding arbitration of such a decision, by any "aggrieved party," must be made within 30 days.
Speaking for all six officers of USA Equestrian, its president, Alan F. Balch, commented, "USA Equestrian has come to the conclusion that arbitration is the best forum in which a full and independent hearing of all relevant facts can be achieved, absent an immediate mediated settlement. We are confident in this course of action for many reasons; but three essential issues are clear:

Equestrian Vaulters Awarded Championship Titles
Livermore, CA - The dust has settled and the vaulters and horses have returned home with the knowledge that dreams can come true. The American Vaulting Association highest honors have been awarded in 17 divisions to equestrian vaulters. National Champions and Reserve National Champion status to be coveted for the next year, until the opportunity to defend their titles occurs in Denver, Colorado in August, 2002. Titles are awarded in Individual, Pas de Deux and Team events divided into levels distinguished by the gait of the horse and earned levels of the vaulters.
Crowds of up to 1,000 were awestruck by the spectacular performances inspired from gymnastics and dance performed to music with the moving horse. Many spectators made the trip to the Robertson Park Equestrian Center to view the sport for the first time. After seeing the six A-Teams perform their freestyle (Kur), Jan Hart of Livermore, CA made her way to the AVA booth to make a donation to assist the championship team with their trip to the World Equestrian Games in Spain. Hart stated, "It's absolutely amazing to see the vaulters working with their horses - it's a beautiful sport to watch"!

NDS Alfred's Tower Ride
FEI Emirates Endurance Worldwide Rankings Ride - August 24th 2002
Stourhead House, Wiltshire - Great Britain
A Ride report by Susie Cain
A new venue and excellent weather made the Bank Holiday NDS Equine 2002 Alfred's Tower, Wiltshire, ride an outstanding success.
The fields adjacent to Stourhead House were turned from cattle grazing and cow pats into an equestrian marquee village over the weekend. Susie Cain of NDS Equine said, "As sponsors we were delighted with the event. The six months of preparation meant that the weekend appeared to go with military precision and the organisation by the ride organisers John Hudson, Chairman of Endurance GB, his wife Jane, Mike Dando and the 90 volunteers made it a fun and safe weekend for all competitors".
The main attraction on Friday afternoon was the pre-ride vetting of the horses in the FEI 146km 3* event. The National Trust kindly allowed the 22 competitors to trot up in front of Stourhead House but "keep off the grass"! The FEI Ground Jury and the Veterinary panel turned out in their best bib and tucker and the watching crowd, which included some bemused members of the general public doing the tour of the house and gardens, applauded each horse as it was passed by the smartly dressed vets.

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY— August 27, 2002 — A large field of show jumping competitors took to the grand prix field in the $5,000 David Yurman Open Jumper competition, but it was Candice King who was crowned the winner at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show.
Of the 69 horses that contested the competition, King of Wellington, FL, was able to post a clear round in the fastest time, 68.47 seconds, with Espadon.
“I went in to try to get a piece of the competition, but also to keep him confident,” said King of the 10-year-old selle francais gelding that was purchased in Belgium this past January. “He’s a special horse, he is like my best friend.”
King used the $5,000 David Yurman Open Jumper competition to determine if she will compete in Friday’s $30,000 Adequan Grand Prix, and Espandon certainly proved he is up to the challenge.

USET Awards Grants to World Equestrian Games and World Championship Athletes
Gladstone, NJ—August 28, 2002—On June 24, 2002, the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Board of Trustees approved a financial needs based grant system to assist athletes who are qualified to compete and train internationally but are unable to pay the cost associated with such competition and training.
There are times when discipline specific funding is insufficient to pay all international competition and training, costs and individual athletes and/or owners are sometimes required to pay the pro rata cost. There may also be times when a deserving individual is unable to attend a training session or competition because of the cost, and the USET Athlete Grant would be available to assist in such a situation.
In 2002, the USET Board of Trustees approved, and has awarded, $50,400 in Athlete Grants to individuals who have been selected for the 2002 World Equestrian Games or World Singles Driving Championships. The individual grants range from $3-4,000 per athlete. The grants are intended to help offset expenses of athletes who have been selected for these World Championships (team, individuals and alternates) and whose expenses have not been fully funded through discipline restricted contributions to the USET. To be eligible an athlete's (or parents’ if athlete is under 18 years of age) income must not exceed $125,000.

S&L Appear-Al Showed Fine Style while Truffle Put the Icing on the Cake in the BET/USET Show Jumping Talent Search at the 2002 Hampton Classic
BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY — August 27, 2002 — Krista Freundlich of Locust, NJ, riding S&L Appear-Al, claimed the ‘A’ section while Truffle emerged victorious with rider Tania Hack of New York, NY in the ‘B’ section of the BET/United States Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping Rider Talent Search presented by Sooner Trailers at the 2002 Hampton Classic Horse Show.
An equitation competition designed for riders aged 21 and under, competitors were first judged strictly on the flat, without jumps, for their position, control of the horse and riding style. The top riders then advanced to the jumping phase of the Talent Search where they were judged on their form over fences.
Due to high entries in the BET/USET Show Jumping Rider Talent Search, the competition was divided into two sections, ‘A’ and ‘B.’
The premise of the BET/USET Talent Search is to prepare the nation’s up-and-coming riders for the grand prix ranks and, hopefully, international competition representing the United States Equestrian Team.

No. 10 to Receive Slaughter Horse Transportation Report
A long distance ride aimed at raising awareness of the appalling conditions in which 133,000 horses are transported across Europe for slaughter every year, will be reaching 10 Downing Street on Sunday, 1st September.
The ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Transportation Awareness Ride started at the Border Union Show in Kelso, Scotland on 27th July and will be finishing at 10 Downing Street where they will deliver a new report on the charity's findings on the European slaughter horse traffic.

Says Keith Meldrum, Legislative Consultant for the ILPH and ex MAFF Chief Veterinary Officer, "It is a lamentable fact that the EU permits horses to suffer by allowing them to be moved over long distances when it could be possible for them to be slaughtered close to their point of origin. It is equally shocking that some Member States don't even enforce their existing animal welfare legislation.
"We hope that the European Parliament will both improve and implement a new Directive for the protection of horses bound for slaughter in Europe."

APHA answers the call from SBC Southwestern Bell
American Paint Horses featured on cover of nearly one million Fort Worth telephone directories

FORT WORTH, Texas-The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) answered the call from SBC Southwestern Bell recently, when the communications company was looking for a beautiful image to grace the cover of its new Greater Fort Worth Yellow Pages telephone directory.
APHA was honored when the company chose Legacy of Color, the new larger-than-life-size bronze of four American Paint Horses that adorns the entrance of the association's Fort Worth headquarters, for its cover image. The bronze, depicting four horses - a powerful stallion pushing along two mares and foal - was unveiled this year to commemorate APHA's 40th anniversary.
APHA is in good company with its new telephone directory exposure. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth was selected for the cover of SBC's White Pages directory. In all, about 1.7 million copies of the Yellow Pages and White Pages volumes have been printed for delivery to households, businesses and government offices throughout the Fort Worth area.

Fishing For Mustangs
John Sharp has forgotten more about horses than most of us will ever know. He's been at it about eighty years and in the last two of those years has taught me the art of using the bamboo pole to make first contact in the gentling of mustangs.
I met John in '97. I was doing a benefit demonstration for a handicapped riding program in north Denver when he asked the question "How would you catch a difficult horse in the round pen?" "I find a good cowboy who can rope and let him do it. I can take it from there", I replied with a smile. He liked that answer as he saw someone who knew his limitations and didn't pretend to be something he wasn't. Later, after the show he asked me to work with a difficult mustang that was at the Horse Protection League. We arranged to meet a couple of days later at the end of a clinic I was doing. Sure enough he was there with the two year old in a stock trailer.
"I can get a rope on him if you'd like," he offered. We only had a big indoor arena to work in and no confined area, so that would have to do. Out came the 12' bamboo pole and a length of ½" cotton rope with a loop on the end. "Now we'll do a little fishing", he informed me as he wrapped the rope around the end of the pole and left about three feet dangling. He eased the pole over the horse's back draping the rope on the other side and leaving it hang there. Then he proceeded to get the loop with the pole and pull it back to himself. With a loop around the horse's neck he then formed another loop which ended up over the horse's nose.
"There. Now you can get some work done and have some control", he informed me with a smile. My mouth was probably so wide open it was catching flies.

The organizers were delighted with the way everything went and reckoned around 30,000 visitors attended the event and enjoyed seeing some of the world's top riders in action in spectacular surroundings.
Despite a few showers on Saturday afternoon, the cross-country course rode well, while conditions could not have been better for Sunday's showjumping.
Winner of the international two star three day event for the second year running was Lucy Wiegersma, from Cornwall with Susan Hunt's nine-year-old mare, Friday Morning. This is the first time that anyone has won the two star section in consecutive years and made Lucy's journey worthwhile.

In the one star competition, Heidi Simmons from York moved up from third place overnight to first with a perfect showjumping round on her own seven-year-old gelding, The Biz.

Charles won Stg£20,000 with a double clear, while Smith lowered two poles on his final round.
Last year at the same meeting, Charles won a Peugeot 206 cabriolet and Stf£10,000 by winning the Derby, also on Corrada, with a double clear and two time faults.

Connors Narrows Gap For Leadership Of Grand Prix Placings
Though Clem McMahon stole the show with his second win in a row of the weekend, it was two placings at the Limerick Grand Prix meeting today that gained Francis Connors some valuable points in his battle to catch Conor Swail at the top of the Kerrygold Grand Prix League.
McMahon took the competition with <Dark Flight>, the Kathleen McDermott-owned horse that Clem had also rode to victory at North Wexford yesterday (Saturday). But Connors today took Second with <Cruiseway> and <Who's Business As Usual>, which, added to his two Top Six placings on Saturday at North Wexford, moves him up to 84 points against what were formerly regarded as Swail's unassailable 105 points in the Kerrygold League.

You’ve Got the Look
USTPA releases new corporate logo
(Wichita Falls, Texas) – Team penning just got a new look to a fairly new game in the horse industry as the United States Team Penning Association (USTPA) releases its new corporate logo today.
The release of our new logo is just the first step in our new strategic marketing plan designed to grow this sport,” said USPTA President Ronnie Gebauer. “The logo represents what we believe to be the most critical part of the sport, and that is the team work needed in penning three head of cattle.”

Good conformation? Maybe
Good conformation-as defined by almost everyone-is often times not exactly what you want in your performance horse.
"The best conformation," says Don Blazer in his newest Know and Go Series e-booklet "is the conformation which gets you the performance you want. And good conformation by the usual standards may not get the job done."Blazer explains the standards of conformation established by most breed associations are related to the horse's efficiency of movement and not to specific performances.
