£2,500
Donation To Sussex-Based Disabled Riding Unit
American Express funds horse purchase for riding therapy
A £2,500 donation from one of the county's leading employers
means that a Sussex charity offering riding therapy to disabled people
can purchase a much-needed additional horse.
The
funding, from Brighton-based American Express, will allow the Riding
Therapy Unit at Ferring Country Centre, near Worthing, to add to
its 11-strong stable of horses - those with the build, strength
and temperament suitable for use on the riding therapy programme
cost between £2,500 and £3,500.
Ferring
Country Centre fundraiser Gaye Baker said the donation will enable
them to offer riding therapy to even more people.
"This
is a very popular facility," she said. "We are open seven
days a week for the 140-plus people who take the opportunity to
enjoy the unique benefits of riding."
Jo
Crockett, Public Affairs & Communications Manager at American
Express in Brighton, praised the work of the charity which provides
work experience and training for around 50 adults with special needs.
"The
Centre also fulfils a very important role by giving people with
learning difficulties real jobs in horticulture, conservation, gardening,
craft and carpentry," she said.
"Like
others using the Centre they, too, can enjoy the benefits of riding
- which include improved balance, co-ordination and confidence -
as well as the therapeutic effects that close involvement with animals
brings.
"However,
it's an expensive sport and charities that offer this facility need
a constant injection of funding. American Express has a strong commitment
to supporting the local community and we're pleased to be able to
help in this way. We look forward to seeing 'our' horse in due course."
