2000 OLYMPIAN CAPTURES SPEED CLASS

WELLINGTON, FL - March 2, 2001 - Show Jumping's 2000 Olympian, Laura Kraut, 36, of Oconomowoc, WI piloted her mount, Palermo VII to victory in the Tommy Bahama Modified Speed at Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club on Friday.

It was a tight race as US Equestrian Team Veteran Laura Kraut, currently ranked Second in the American Grandprix Association standings, and her mount, Palermo VII, bested a field of 27 starters with double fault-free rounds over the jumping course designed by Germany's Olaf Petersen in 31.97 seconds, defeating Chris Kappler, 34, of Pittstown, NJ, riding Ursa Major. Kappler finished second with a time of 32.28 seconds in the jump-off, just splits behind Kraut. Third place honors went to US Equestrian Team Veteran, Joe Fargis, 53, aboard Edgar, who trailed Kappler by 2/10ths of a second with a time of 32.49 seconds.

Show Jumping action continues this weekend, culminating with the $75,000 Tommy Bahama Florida Open Grandprix at 2:00 PM on Sunday at Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club. Gates open at 8:00 AM. Call (561) 793-JUMP for more information.
