White Birch, Pony Express Register Wins In Hall Of Fame

Polo Sunday At International Polo Club Palm Beach

WELLINGTON, Florida – Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre scored eight goals to lead White Birch over San Saba 12-9 in a 22-goal Hall of Fame Cup polo match Sunday at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The victory gave White Birch (3-0) sole possession of first place in its division.

In other Hall of Fame Cup action, 7-goaler Sapo Caset scored six goals to lead Pony Express over C Spear 12-9.

“We managed to keep (San Saba’s leading scorer) Agustin Merlos scoreless in the first half and that was important,” said Aguerre, who was named the game’s MVP.

Merlos finished with three goals, all on penalty shots in the second half. The 9-goaler also missed three 60-yard penalty shots, the last one with 5:14 remaining in the game that would have tied the score at 10-10.

“Still, to win the tournament we have to play better as a team,” said Aguerre. “We’re playing good defense, but we’re missing goals, missing opportunities.”

Eight-goaler Hector Galindo led San Saba (1-3) with four goals while patron Tommy Lee Jones scored one goal. Del Walton added three goals for White Birch while patron Peter Brant, playing with a painful pulled thigh muscle, scored one goal.

Pony Express’ victory moved them into a second-place tie with idle Isla Carroll, both with 2-1 records, a game behind White Birch. Alex Agote added four goals while Santiago Trotz and patron Bob Daniels scored one goal each for Pony Express. C Spear patron Tommy Boyle scored a team-high four goals while Matias Magrini added three goals and Paco de Narvaez had two goals.

Seventeen teams entered the tournament. The Hall of Fame Cup final is Sunday, February 29 at 3 p.m. at the International Polo Club Palm Beach stadium.
