Daran Cohn and Gangster Win
$10,000 Jr/A-O Jumper Classic at Indio--A Qualifying Class for the
Cosequin® USGPL Finals |
INDIO, CA (March 4, 2001)--Daran Cohn, 18, of San
Diego, California, riding Gangster, was the only rider in a field of 51 horses
to go double-clear in the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic at the
Indio Desert Circuit in California today. Cohn took home the blue ribbon, an
embroidered cooler, a silver trophy, and $3,000 for her win. Gangster is an
eight-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Greystone Farms. Cohn trains with
Judy Martin and her father, Dan Cohn, owner of Greystone Farms. The class was a
qualifier for the Cosequin United States Grand Prix League Finals to be held in
Culpeper, Virginia, September 26-30.
Cohn said she started riding Gangster a year ago. "When we got him he was
totally crazy. He's been kind of squirrelly for a year. He just moved up a
division this show. He's spooky still, but he's coming along. I've been showing
him in small classes. This is the first time in the A-Os at Indio. This is the
second time he's even had a clear round."
Buddy Brown of Wellington, Florida, was the course designer for the class,
which was held in the Grand Prix field. For Round One, Brown built a 12-jump
course that included a triple combination at Fence No. 4 and a double at Fence
No. 7. Time Allowed was set at 80 seconds. The biggest challenges for Cohn on
course were the combinations. "I don't like the combinations, they're
tricky. My horse is backed off in combinations. I thought we were going to do
two and three strides in the combination. He did one stride and landed
spooking, then we almost jumped the standard coming out of the combination. The
rest of the course rode nicely. I like a lot of single fences. It's better than
lines. My horse doesn't make adjustments very well." Twelve horses had
clear rounds and moved on to the jump off.
The seven-jump short course had Time Allowed set at 42 seconds and did not
include any combinations. Cohn was sixth in the order of go and had the first
and only clear round, clocking in at 39.588. All but three of the jump-off
riders were faster than Cohn. Kandi McCoy of Camarillo, California, on
Froccs, galloped the course in 36.501, but had a rail for four faults, taking
second place and $2,000 for owner Aspen Springs Ranch. Fred Bauer of Millbrae,
California, on his Marble Arch tripped the timers in 37.504 but had the No. 2
fence down for four faults, earning third place and $1,400. Bauer and Marble
Arch won the $10,000 Junior/Amateur Owner High Class at the Cosequin USGPL
Finals in 1999 and 2000.
Cohn said she liked the jump off course and actually changed her game plan once
she started to jump. "I was planning to go around everything and just go
for a clear round because he's kind of green. Then I got in there and he was
turning so well I just took the inside turns. I thought, 'Oh, Judy's going to
kill me. My dad's going to kill me."
Cohn has been riding since she was seven years old. Currently, in addition to
Gangster, she is riding a four-year old and two seven-year-old horses in the
lower Amateur-Owner classes at the Indio Desert Circuit. Cohn said she has
ridden horses for clients a few times but mainly rides her own horses. "I
would like to be a Grand Prix rider," said Cohn. And the Olympics?
"Maybe in the far, far future."
