17th March 2001 NFU Response to Advice on Countryside Activities
The NFU has warned everyone thinking of going into rural areas to take thegreatest possible care following Government guidelines released today advising the public of places that they can visit.
It would be premature if people thought they were again free to roam the countryside even in areas currently unaffected by the foot and mouth disease, said NFU President Ben Gill.

They’ve named cliffs after him, and a valley in Arizona and a fort in Kansas. He did some miraculous things. And yes, he was a hard little critter, without fear and he got tougher as the going got rougher.
But for my money, they gave him credit which belongs elsewhere. And the names of the real heroes are mostly forgotten.

Dealing with Rearing and Pulling
At some point it its training, something will startle or frighten an energetic, red blooded baby horse and he will rear or pull back or run sideways while the trainer is leading him. Or he may jump around just because he's young and he's feeling good. Or maybe he's challenging his trainer like he would another horse in the herd just to see who's who in the pecking order.
These things are actually the trainer's fault because they allowed the animal's attention to wander. Then an awful lot of trainers make a second mistake. To get the horse's attention back, they jerk the shank or yank the horse sideways or pop him with the end of the lead rope or they yell at him.
This is the "biggest, baddest wins" school of horse training.. This method sometimes looks like it works. If the trainer really is the biggest, baddest one, they may get the horse to freeze and hesitate before they startle or rear or pull back the next time. But the horse hasn't really learned anything except that when they're frightened or startled, they're going to get attacked so they better watch out. That's not a lesson you can build on to teach the horse anything else.

horse Global Masters and World Cup Western European League Final Announced by PERA for Lake District Event at Armathwaite Hall
The Armathwaite Hall Strongid-P event has today (March 15th, 2001) been confirmed as the new venue for the PERA Global Masters competition, which will run at this year’s event over the weekend of July 20-22.
Previously hosted just once at Burghley, the Global Masters competition, open to all full members of the Professional Event Riders Association (PERA), will run as part of the Armathwaite Hall’s Strongid-P Classic section. The Classic section, which offers a specially commissioned bronze trophy and a first prize of £4000, will also be open to non-PERA members, so the prospect of two different high profile winners should add significantly to the event’s appeal.
PERA will also add around £3000 to the prize fund, with this amount - plus the impressive PERA Global Masters Trophy - going to the top placed riders in the Global Masters.

16th March 2001 Harness Racing in Great Britain
Wales & Border Counties Racing Association is the original independent harness racing organization in Great Britain. Its area covers the southern half of Wales and the bordering counties of England, extending from the West coast of Wales as far as the English county of Herefordshire, and from Caersws in Mid Wales to Ammanford in South Wales.
Harness Racing has been established in Mid- and South Wales since before the end of the nineteenth century, racing the native breed of horses, the Welsh Cobs. In the latter part of the twentieth century, these indigenous trotters have been replaced by Standardbred Horses imported from America. British Harness racing today is dominated by pacing horses with very few trotters currently competing.
The season traditionally begins on Easter Monday with the oldest meeting in the calendar at Llangadog in Carmarthenshire, South Wales. Race meetings are held every weekend until the end of September, while mid-week evening meetings are held regularly during July and August. The last race meeting of the season is a charity meeting with the venue changing yearly where the horse-owners hold a low prize-money meeting to raise money for local charities. The presentation of the annual awards to horses and drivers takes place at this meeting and adds to the great friendly party atmosphere.

Where the occasional quiet success makes it all worthwhile.
Knowle Rock is not a flashy, vast concern; it's not often in the public eye, and it's not famous for producing regular quantities of "big name" horses performing on the Country's top stages. However what Knowle Rock has proved over the years is that what it does it does very well. Its idyllic setting and facilities, the attention to detail and concentration on quality rather than quantity brings its own rewards.
Knowle Rock covers several aspects of the equestrian spectrum from stud work to the resting and convalescence of out of training and competition horses. Life, of course, can be a procession of days of graft and grind until those significant moments when we can be uplifted by the successes of horses that have been born at, or passed through, Knowle Rock during their careers.
One such story is worth the telling and for that we must go back to the early hours of a June morning in 1992. .......

The loss of a horse at any time is upsetting but when it is a mare lost at, or shortly after, foaling the situation can be even more stressful. There is, hopefully, the joy of at least having her foal as a lasting legacy but then the anguish of having to nurture the orphan through difficult times without its natural mother.
Once the foal has received colostrum, vital in the first few hours of life to ensure it’s body is able to fight disease, there is then the dilemma of finding a suitable alternative to the dam’s milk, on which the foal will thrive. Locating a foster mare can be difficult and there is no guarantee that she will take to the orphan foal, so hand rearing with a milk replacer, such as Buckeye Mare's Milk Plus from Baileys Horse Feeds, becomes the only option.

Friday is traditionally breeder's day at Indoor Brabant; in the morning there is a try-out test for participants in the finals of the TNT Sires of the World. On Friday evening, 23 March, the finals of the TNT Sires of the World are programmed for 19.00 hours. The twenty five stallions with the highest ranking, after four competition heats, are permitted to start in the finals.

Indio Molly Warmington and Laudatius Win $25,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic at Indio Desert Circuit
INDIO, CA (March 11, 2001)--Molly Warmington, 22, of Newport Beach, California, riding Laudatius, bested a field of 64 riders to win the $25,000 Junior/Young Rider/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic at the Indio Desert Circuit in California today. The class was a Zone X Young Rider Selection Trial for the 2001 North American Young Rider Championships and an official Zone 10 Prix des States Qualifying Event for the 2001 Junior Jumper Championships. Warmington has been riding since she was five years old and currently trains with Ginnie Bryant in San Juan Capistrano. As owner/rider, Warmington took home $7,500 in prize money for her victory.

horse Canada's Millar Family Takes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in $100,000 Grand Prix of Ocala presented by Great American Insurance
OCALA, FLORIDA (March 11, 2001)--The Millar family of Perth, Ontario, had a very successful day at the HITS Ocala Golden Hills International Show Grounds in Florida today--Jonathan Millar, 27, riding Fine Line won the $100,000 Grand Prix of Ocala presented by Great American Insurance Companies, Inc., his father Ian Millar, 54, on Ivar was second, and his sister, Amy Millar, 23, was third on Mill Creek Roseanne. The Millars were the only riders in a field of 44 to go clear on the Round One course built by Anthony D'Ambrosio and the three went head-to-head in the Jump-Off. Jonathan and Fine Line, an 11-year old Dutch Warmblood stallion, had the only fault-free trip in the tiebreaker. As owner/rider, Jonathan took home $30,000 for his win.

Unfortunately, people often seek alternative methods to medicine after they have exhausted the more traditional methods or might I say, traditional beliefs. A wise man would tell you that reality is not dependant on your belief. Ptolemy, the second century astronomer taught that the earth was the center of the universe. This was the accepted belief until Copernicus, the 15th century astronomer, discovered that the sun was the center of the universe. Until the 16th century, the world was believed to be flat. Not until Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese navigator who sailed around the world without falling off the edge, was it believed to be round. It’s not to say that traditional medicine is not valid nor that nontraditional medicine is invalid. Perhaps a wise man would say that to seek all available paths to good health would be a wise decision.

Guelph, ON - With anticipation building over the signing of a new Memorandum of Agreement between the Equine Research Centre (ERC) and the University of Guelph (U of G), the Centre is preparing to launch its newly designed web site April 15.
"The new web site will reflect the collaboration between the ERC, University of Guelph and the Ontario Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), " said ERC Communications Coordinator, Kelly Counsell. " The three groups have been meeting regularly to offer up ideas and materials for the site.

13th March 2001 Dansk Varmblod - The National Stallion Show 2001
More than thrirty thousand visitors found their way to Danish Warmblood's annual Stallion Grading show in Herning Exhibition Centre where 250 horses were presented in shows, gradings and competitions. The event was again attended by the Protector of the association, the Danish Princess Benedikte of Berleburg accompanied by Prince Richard, Prince Gustav and Princess Nathalie.
Head of Danish Warmblood's grading committee Poul Graugaard proclaimed that the collection of 3 years old stallions is predominently showing a lot of well moving youngsters, some of them with great potential for the big time dressage ring. A couple of very good jumping stallions were also approved in Herning this year but there was no specific jumping star to be found in this year's crop.

Indio Richard Spooner and Southshore Win $150,000 Ford Grand Prix in Two-Horse Jump-Off at Indio Desert Circuit
INDIO, CA (March 11, 2001)--Richard Spooner riding Southshore had the only double-clear on Conrad Homfeld's $150,000 Ford Grand Prix course today at the Indio Desert Circuit in California, clinching his win in the final event of the six-week circuit for the third year in a row. For most of Round One, it looked like there wasn't going to be a jump-off. Only Hap Hansen on Maloubet, the 20th rider in a field of 39, had a clear first round until Spooner aboard Southshore--the last duo on course--went clean and forced the two-horse jump-off.

The Welara pony is a cross between the Welsh pony and the Arabian horse. To cross these two animals tends to produce an animal of exceptional refinement and beauty, with great intelligence and fine temperament. This cross has been intentionally made for several hundred years, however the most noteworthy is that of Lady Wentworth of Sussex, England
The primary feature of the Welara is beauty. He has a naturally arched neck, a dished face, with a high head carriage. He is very intelligent, basically friendly, and works well with humans. His disposition is his second most remarkable feature. In almost all individuals, a desire to please, a liking for human beings, and a generous giving of himself is very apparent. He is strong, and larger than most pony breeds.

Trick Horses vs. Trained Horses
When youngsters come to Meredith Manor, one of the first things I show them is a big ball of string. Now if I asked them to sit down right then and there and eat that whole ball of string, they'd find that pretty gross.
But if they started at the end, which is actually the beginning, and they swallowed a very little bit at a time--very methodically, very logically, very calmly--ultimately they would finish it. Then they'd say, "Well, look at me! I swallowed that whole ball of string!" Training a horse is identical to swallowing a ball of string, both from the trainer's perspective and from the horse's viewpoint.
One of the most common ways people get in trouble training horses is that they ask their horse to take too big a bite of string at one time. When you're working with a baby horse, each thing you teach him must be taught as one little word, one little bit of language, that you'll eventually put together to hold a conversation.

Indio It's Five Grand Prix Wins for Spooner at Indio--Robinson Wins His Third $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix of the Circuit
INDIO, CA (March 9, 2001)--Today was the last of six $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix classes to be contested at this year's Indio Desert Circuit, and Richard Spooner, 31, of Burbank, California, closed out his Ariat tour by taking first place with Robinson and second place with Southshore. Spooner won four of the six $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix competitions this circuit--three with Robinson and one with Bradford owned by Tracey Kenly and Kenly Farms. The win today brings Spooner's total Grand Prix victories at Indio to five--he also won the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix with Southshore on January 28. Spooner took home $7,500 for Robinson's owner, the Half Moon Bay Investment Group and $5,000 for Southshore's owner, Eldorado 29.

In the study entitled "Growth areas in Recreational Sport" (1996), the Institute for Leisure Research counted 2,400,000 riders in Germany; 2,200,000 lived in the west of the country. 200,000 of them in the eastern provinces. · Of these, 1,400,000 west Germans and 90,000 east Germans regularly mounted a horse.
