The Story of Pearl the Pony

A Picture of Pearl the Pony

Pearl is an 18-year-old Shetland pony that was rescued in horrid condition. She had worms, anemia and was tied to a tree, forcing her to stand on hooves that were 14-16 inches long. Needless to say, she was crippled. After several failed attempts to get the appropriate authorities involved, a neighbor was able to rescue Pearl, and get her on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, 2 months later, due to an improper wrapping , Pearl lost circulation in one of her legs. This led to gangrene and eventually the loss of a major portion of one of her legs. This is usually an automatic death sentence for a horse.

But Pearl surprised everyone by continuing to walk and graze. Pearl’s strong-will and determination to live bought her some much needed time as her vet and her owner searched for answers……On Christmas Day, Pearl got a remarkable opportunity…a chance at a prosthetic! This is still rare at the moment and in the research stage (for horses). Pearl is in Virginia at Serenity Equine, where it could take 6-9 months for the whole procedure. A small price to pay for a little pony who deserves so much!
