THE ITALIAN DERBY, Gr.1, 3 y.o. , metres 2400 Roma, Capannelle, may, 28, good to firm
Also ran: Sirolo, Quality Team, Sopran Montanelli, Sacundai, Mali, Rosolaw, Golden Indigo, Kumhar, Night Style, Blemish, Tornado Mitch, Caluki, As You Like, Rivers Curtain, Cranko. Retired: Cherin Younes. Distances: 6l, short head, 2l, head. Time: 2.27.10 Analysis: The 117th edition of the Italian Derby was won, and in a very easy way, by KALLISTO, a colt of genuine Teutonic type, descending from a female family (fam. 4b) developed for the entire 20th century in Germany (in the post-war by Gestuet Roettgen), appealing solely to German sires, with the exception of Ballymoss, third mare sire of the derby-winner. Nevertheless Gestuet Roettgen hasnt achieved greatest gratifications from this female line descending from Contessa Oleandra (33, b. by Oleander) followed by Konigswiese (44, b. by Wahnfried) and, in the post-war, by Konigin Olga (60, b. by Orator) and by Kleine Ballerina (73, s. by Ballymoss). Kallistos mother, Kalinitka (86, b.o. by Koeniggsstuhl) won two anonymous races at 2 years and at 3 managed only places, the best being the 3rd in a Sommer Stuten Preis at Krefeld (July, 9) on the distance of 2150 metres. At stud Kalinikta, before Kallisto, bred the strong Kalimnos (by Aspros) that captured 8 victories, but perhaps the best race he even ran was the 3rd place in the Europa Championat, Gr.3, metres 2400. From the mating with Sterkoenig, a Kalamouns son having a great turn of foot, available also on long distances (3rd in German Derby, 2nd in Europa Preis, 1st in the Furstenberg Rennen and, in Italy, in Premio Roma and in Premio Federico Tesio), winner of 8 races and 804.000 German Marks, sire in service at the Gestuet Rottgen, who is also the breeder and the owner, is born Kallisto, a strong and stout athlete, ones of German breeding type. Kallisto, back from two victories in 2000, the best being Fruhjahrspreis, Gr.3, metres 2050 in Frankfurt, April 23, is inbred 5x5 on the excellent German sire Neckar, and is bred from the nick: sire from the Nasrullah Grey Sovereign line (at evidence, of brilliant characteristics) and mare from Persian Gulf Tamerlane sire line, therefore safer as a stamina bringing and sure source of moral and physical qualities. Aptitudinal valuation (according to Varola) (diagram: 50/28/77/77/57; at seven groups: 21/29/28/77/43,5/33,5/57; Index of Consistency I.C.- of 4,78) explains with numbers evidence and accuracy, the role of support and genealogical strength of mother (diagram: 9/7,5/26/28/22; I.C. = 9,27) and the outburst and brilliancy of father, who brings down the Index of Consistency from 9,27 to 4,78. Notable in Derby day, is the performance of German breeding, that captured also the 3rd place with Paolini (in struggle with Windsor Boy); the Italian one, instead, must send again the appointment with open Derby victory, the last success going back at Tisserand victory in 1988.
