The following statement was issued to the EFI by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development today.

IMPORT OF HORSES FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM

The Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development has made arrangements to allow horses to be imported from the United Kingdom under licence, and subject to strict protocols which were agreed with the Irish Horseracing Authority and with the Turf Club on Friday, 4th May, 2001. For the present the protocols limit the points of entry to the State to Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports and to approved Border Crossings.

Horses imported must be accompanied by
- an import licence, which is obtainable from the Animal Health Division of
the Department;
- by an intra Community Health Certificate, including supplementary certification in relation to Foot and Mouth Disease, from the UK authorities;
- by additional certification from a Private veterinary practitioner providing additional Foot and Mouth Disease related guarantees and
]- by a permit authorising the movement of the horse from the point of entry into the State to the point of destination. This is obtainable from the District Veterinary Office of destination.
