Shulman
to sign copies of Ride of Their Lives at Joseph-Beth Booksellers
Lexington,
KY - Lenny Shulman, Emmy award-winning writer and author of Ride
of Their Lives: The Triumphs and Turmoil of Today's Top Jockeys,
will sign copies of his book from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May
29th, at the Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Lexington Green in Lexington,
Kentucky.
Shulman,
features editor for The Blood-Horse magazine, chronicles the lives
of 14 of Thoroughbred racing's most successful contemporary jockeys.
Research for this book included interviews with each jockey and
establishing a rapport of trust with them, allowing for greater
openness and honesty from the jockeys. Included are amazing tales
of human triumph, such as rising from the depths of poverty, drug
and alcohol abuse, and the constant struggle to maintain the low
weight necessary to ride daily.
"The
book is both a profile of these marvelous, and often misunderstood,
athletes, and a behind-the-scenes look at one of America's most
popular sports", said Shulman. "Jockeys perform the most
perilous job in sports, yet are among the most underrated athletes
in the world...They put their lives on the line every time they
get on a horse, often riding seven or eight horses a day, six days
a week. Most must diet to keep their weight at levels lower than
the average 12-year-old boy, yet they need immense strength to control
thousand-pound Thoroughbreds. The strength and the skill and the
bravery of these guys should be appreciated."
The
fourteen jockeys profiled in Ride of Their Lives are: Chris Antley,
Jerry Bailey, Russell Baze, Jorge Chavez, Pat Day, Eddie Delahoussaye,
Kent Desormeaux, Mark Guidry, Chris McCarron, Corey Nakatani, Laffit
Pincay Jr., Mike Smith, Gary Stevens, and Pat Valenzuela.
Ride
of Their Lives is available for sale at Joseph-Beth Booksellers
as well as other fine bookstores across the country. The book is
also available for purchase online at http://www.exclusivelyequine.com,
