ILPH in New Inspection
Role |
A new initiative by the Avon and Somerset
Constabulary will ensure the future welfare of police horses in their mounted
branch.
Concerned that their working animals, both
equine and canine, are being treated humanely at all times, the Avon and
Somerset Constabulary have asked the ILPH (International League for the
Protection of Horses) and the Canine Defence League to make regular
inspections.
Peter Griffiths, ILPH Field Officer for the
area, will make one announced and two unannounced visits a year to check on the
conditions under which the horses are housed, trained and transported. The
visits will be unsupervised and he will have unrestricted access to all
appropriate areas.
The initial period for the inspections is
three years, to be renewed by mutual agreement.
Says Peter Griffiths, "The ILPH is very
pleased to have been asked by the Avon and Somerset Constabulary to inspect
their equine operations. We applaud any initiative that allows public bodies to
open up their doors to outside inspection, especially where animal welfare is
concerned."
