Laura Chapot Sweeps Both Open Jumper Classes Friday
at 34th Annual Lake Placid Horse Show
Lake Placid, NYJune 27, 2003Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station,
NJ rode to victory in both featured open jumper classes Friday at
the 34th annual Lake Placid Horse Show. The 31-year-old daughter of
Olympic veterans Frank and Mary Chapot won the Lake Placid Resort
North American League (NAL) Speed Stake on Three Coins and the Turtle
Lane Farm Welcome Stake on Little Big Man.
Chapot
earned her win in the speed stake by completing the 13-jump one-round
course at the North Elba Showgrounds in the days fastest time
of 57.441 seconds. The 26th of 28 entries, Chapot took the win away
from Sydney Olympic veteran and seven-time American Grandprix Association
(AGA) Rider of the Year Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington, FL
who had been leading throughout most of the class with a time of
58.257 seconds on Camille.
In
the Welcome Stake, Chapot edged another Olympic veteran with a fast
ride at the end of the class. One of only three entries from the
starting field of 20 to reach a tiebreaking jump-off by riding without
penalty over the 15-jump first-round course, she also rode fault-free
over the eight-jump second-round course and her time of 35.357 seconds
proved good enough to edge four-time Olympian Anne Kursinski of
Flemington, NJ. Kursinski had been leading with a time of 36.072
seconds on Indeed.
Chapot,
Engle and Kursinski are expected to be among the star-studded field
competing Sunday when the 2003 Lake Placid Horse Show culminates
with the weeks main event, the $50,000 Budweiser Grand Prix
of Lake Placid for the Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy. Prior
to the Grand Prix, Sundays schedule features the Salamander
Farm High Junior Jumper Classic and the Mirror Lake Inn Amateur-Owner

Jumper Classic Series. The Juliam Farm Lead Line class and C.M.
Hadfields Saddlery Parade of Champions will then be held immediately
before the Grand Prix which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
