IRELAND WINS HICKSTEAD NATIONS CUP BY ONE FENCE

The Irish quartet of Dermott Lennon, Cian O'Connor, Peter Charles and Kevin Babington today (Friday) won the British Samsung Nations Cup at Hickstead, England, beating the German favourites by just one fence.

Last man in, Dermott Lennon, displayed his usual coolness under pressure to go clear on the Irish-bred <Liscalgot>, clinching the Prince of Wales Cup for the second year at succession at Hickstead.

The result now catapults Ireland from Fifth to Third position in the world Nations Cup rankings, and with three competitions to go - Dublin (August), Rotterdam (August), Spruce Meadows (September) - could possibly repeat their Samsung Nations Cup Series victory of 2000, but will almost certainly qualify as one of the six teams to compete in the Samsung Nations Cup Final.

1) Germany 61 points
2) Italy 51 points
3) Ireland 43 points

Each Nations Cup win adds 20 points to the overall score.
