Ward Wins Friday Feature at 25th Annual I Love New York Horse
Show
Lake Placid, NY July 5, 2002 McLain Ward of Brewster,
NY continued his red-hot riding at the 25th Annual I Love New
York Horse Show with a win Friday in the Lake Placid Lodge Open
Speed Stake.
Ward,
the top ranked rider on the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping
Rider List and winner of last months $50,000 Rolex USET
Show Jumping Championship, was the 18th of 23 entries to try the
12-jump, one-round course at the North Elba Showgrounds. He took
the class lead when he rode his mount, Éclair, to a penalty-free
ride in 54.582 seconds.
None
of the remaining entries could catch his score with only Laura
Chapot of Neshanic Station, NJ coming close. She rode Sprite to
a clean ride in 55.406 seconds to take second place. Jeff Welles
of Newtown, CT finished third with a time of 56.905 seconds on
Muzcot.
The
I Love New York Horse Show continues through Sunday. The highlight
is Saturday when the horse show hosts the $50,000 I Love New York
Grandprix. Joining Ward, Chapot and Welles in the Grandprix will
be many of the nations best show jumping riders including
Olympic veterans Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington, FL; Nona
Garson of Lebanon, NJ and Lisa Jacquin of Collegeville, PA.
Saturdays
schedule also features the horse shows 10th annual Doggie
Costume Contest sponsored by Lonesome Landing of Saranac Lake
and the Brown Dog Deli and Wine Bar of Lake Placid. All people
who bring leashed dogs in costume to the horse show on July 6
are admitted free. All dogs in the contest receive prizes and
everyone is invited to stay and watch the Grandprix.
The
horse show schedule also includes North American League (NAL)
classes, Adult/Children's Jumper events and Show Jumping Hall
of Fame Jumper Classic series events for junior riders and amateur-owner
riders on Saturday, July 6. Following the Hall of Fame amateur-owner
event, the $10,000 Pin Oak Farm Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic,
the horse show will present the Jimmy Quinn Award to the leading
amateur-owner rider of the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse
Shows.

The
horse show features four rings of action with competition running
from 8:00 a.m. to late afternoon. Admission to the I Love New
York Horse Shows is just $2.00 on weekdays and $5.00 on weekends.
Children under the age of 12 are admitted free. Tickets are available
at the gate. Guided walking tours of the Lake Placid Horse Shows
are available at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday through Friday, for just
$1.00. Tours leave from the Lake Placid Horse Show retail booth.
