Margie
Goldstein Engle Wins $50,000 I Love New York Grandprix at 25th
Annual I Love New York Horse Show
Lake Placid, NY July 6, 2002 Margie Goldstein Engle
of Wellington, FL won the $50,000 I Love New York Grandprix for
the second straight year and third time in four years at the 25th
annual I Love New York Horse Show.
Only
three of the 37 entries were able to ride fault-free over the
16-jump first-round course designed by 1996 Olympic course designer
Linda Allen at the North Elba Showgrounds. They returned for a
tiebreaking ride over the 8-jump jump-off course.
First
to return was Danielle Torano of Fort Lauderdale, FL, on Lancier
4, the 11-year-old Holsteiner (German-bred) she rode to third
place in last weeks $50,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake
Placid. Torano scored four faults for one rail down at the sixth
fence and finished with a time of 41.148 seconds.
Engle
then returned on Hidden Creeks Laurel, a 14-year-old Dutch-bred
mare. Engle, who previously won the Grandprix in 1999 and 2001
on Reggae, turned in a fault-free ride in 40.873 seconds to move
into the lead. The days final entry, Christine Tribble of
Suffield, CT, then scored four faults in 41.001 seconds on After
Eight, a 12-year-old Swedish Warmblood, to move in to second place
behind Engle and drop Torano to third.
Engles
win, combined with last weeks runner-up finish in the $50,000
Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid on Hidden Creeks Perin,
earned her the Richard and Diana Feldman Perpetual Challenge Trophy
for Excellence for the best combined performances in Lake Placids
two Grandprix events.
Prior
to the Grandprix, Grushenka Sanchez of Puerto Rico rode Candys
Best to the win in the $10,000 Pin Oak Farm Amateur-Owner Jumper
Classic and Maggie Jayne rode Jubulent to victory in the $10,000
Salamander Farm High Junior Jumper Classic. Both events are part
of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series that determines
which junior jumper and amateur-owner jumper riders will qualify
to ride in the 2002 National Horse Show. Sanchez tied with Lauren
Bass, winner of the Lake Placid Horse Shows $10,000 Mirror
Lake Inn Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, for the Jimmy Quinn Memorial
Award given for the best combined performance in Lake Placids
two Amateur-Owner Classics.
The
I Love New York Horse Show concludes Sunday. The highlight of
Sundays competition will be the Sidelines North American
League (NAL) Adult Jumper Classic, part of the NAL season-long
series that culminates with year-end finals at the Pennsylvania
National Horse Show in Harrisburg, PA in October.
Overall,
more than 1300 horses and the nations best show jumping
riders came to Lake Placid to compete for $360,000 prize money
at the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows. In addition
to two AGA Grandprix Series events and North American League (NAL)
classes, the horse show schedule also included Adult/Children's
Jumper events and Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic series
events for junior riders and amateur/owner riders. There were
also numerous hunter and equitation divisions including World
Championship Hunter Rider Classes and Hunter Classics.
