Buckskin Extravagana and Production Sale

It is summertime in Arizona, and at HorseBreakers Unlimited that means training, riding and grooming the best selection of buckskin horses anywhere in America. The Ninth Annual Buckskin Extravaganza is just around the corner and at Jon and Marywade Gilberts ranch in Dewey, Arizona everyone is going full speed getting things ready. "Buckskins seem to be the 'hot' color in the horse world today" says Jon "but we've been promoting and selling the buckskins up here for years." The sale will include not just buckskins but also duns and grullos. There will be an excellent selection of saddle horses from trail horses to World Champions, as well as brood mares, weanlings, yearlings and two year olds. We sell Buckskins and all kinds of good horses year round, but I think what really put us on the map is our Buckskin Extravaganza. It is an extremely popular event that brings people from all over the country to Dewey, Arizona to look and shop for the finest buckskin horses.

The weekend's activities will kick off with an open house on Friday August 1, from 3 pm to 7:30pm. "All of the horses will be available for the prospective buyers to come and look at during the open house'' explains Jon. "However, we won't ride any of the horses that afternoon. All of our riders and trainers will be on hand to answer questions. The horses will be in their stalls for viewing, catalogs will be available and our concession stand will be open. It's a nice informal way to present the horses and it gives people a chance to ask questions and browse through all of the horses without having to worry about the time constraints of sale day." Additionally, Jon and Marywade encourage their customers to do lots of shopping long before sale day. "Buying a special horse is a big decision," reminds Marywade. We hope people will make an appointment and come up to the ranch in the weeks preceding the sale and ride a few of the horses that they are interested in. They can also arrange to have a veterinarian do a pre purchase exam if they choose. Then, when sale day rolls around, buyers have a few horses as options and are sure they go home with 'The Horse Of Their Dreams'." The entire catalog will be on our web page at www.horsebreakers.com on June 30. This gives everyone plenty of information to go over. The printed catalog will have pictures, pedigrees, foot notes with descriptions of all of the horses in the sale. The next day is sale day, Saturday, August 2. At 9:00 am the sale preview will begin. The preview begins with the rope horses, then the cow horses and reiners. The saddle horses will be shown throughout the morning by many of the HorseBreakers crew. At noon the sale will start. One of the special features of the sale is the Western Art Auction. This is a select offering of western art presented by Ron and Sharon Burndt, Cowhorse Galleries of Snyder TX. Following the art auction the horse sale begins. Steve Friskup, one of America's premier horse auctioneers will once again preside over the action.
For decades the buckskin horse has been associated with the west and a romantic image of cowboy life. Lots of famous movies and television shows have highlighted the buckskin horses. Many people credit Jon and Marywade with reviving the interest in Buckskin horses. "We think it is mostly a coincidence," says Jon "But buckskins are even showing up at the horse shows now, not just at the ranch and on the trails."
That's one of the things that make's this sale so special; it will include horses from all different disciplines. Ropers, reiners, trail horses, pleasure horses and World Champion show horses! They are all here.

Although times have changed, the need for a dependable, all-around horse is still essential. The ideal mount for the majority of horse enthusiasts is a horse that looks good, works well, is well-trained, has a great disposition and is capable and trustworthy for trail riding, yet one that is adept enough to do team penning, roping, reining, and/or jumping. Our sale horses are well broke and do a little bit of everything. For our breeding program we choose Scottish Bart and mares to produce what we feel is the ideal all-around horse, focusing on perpetuating the best qualities of the American Quarter Horse (preferably buckskin). Our primary objectives are quality, conformation, disposition, versatility and color.

Scottish Bart is the Southwest's premier Buckskin stallion. Scotch is double
registered in the AQHA and the ABRA. He is by Supreme's Image and out of Scotch Barta with five crosses to Skipper W. Scotch was bred and raised on the Speer Ranch in Athens, Texas, where he was used as a working ranch horse and the remuda's breeding stallion. He possesses the qualities Jon and Marywade look for. He has correct conformation, the best disposition in the world, a beautiful color, good size (15.3 hands and 1,350 pounds) and passes all his fine qualities on to his colts. In July 1995 one of his yearling colts was named PHBA Reserve World Champion Amateur Yearling Halter Gelding after earning 40 PHBA Halter and 38 PHBA Lunge Line points. In 1996 Scotch became a World Champion Producing Stallion when Skip Howdy Zip, a two-year-old palomino gelding, was named PHBA World Champion Amateur gelding and Reserve World Champion in Open. Besides producing foals that excel at halter, reining, roping, and
reined cow events, he produces color 85% of the time. His colts have wonderful dispositions, are easy to train, are lovely movers and most of them are the wonderful buckskin color.
Scottish Bart stands for a fee of $1000.00 with a live foal guarantee. His book has been filled for the past 9 years so if you are interested in breeding, make sure to book your mares early in the year.

The Gilbert's have recently added another stallion to their breeding program. El Pachuco Doc. A 1986 AQHA bay stallion sired by Dry Doc and out of a Wimpy mare. "Paco" was born, bred, raised and branded on the King Ranch and caries the legendary bloodlines of Doc Bar, Lightning Bar, Poco Bueno, Wimpy, and Rey Del Rancho. His combined qualities of an outstanding disposition, athleticism, versatility, and cow sense represent the original intentions of the American Quarter Horse. He has earned his Register of Merit as a finished reiner, and he is an accomplished cutter and team roper. His breeding fee is $800.00 and shipped semen is available.
