Wins King George V Cup In Irish Whitewash At Hickstead
|
While
Ireland failed to win the British Nations Cup at Hickstead, England,
on Friday, Ireland's Kevin Babington, from Carrick-on-Suir, took
the show's individual crown today (Sunday) by winning the coveted
King George V Gold Cup on the Irish-bred <Carling King>. The
last Irish rider to do so was Cameron Hanley in 2000.
Babington
also rode the only double clear of the Cup, making it a truly decisive
win, and taking prize money of £10,000 sterling into the bargain.
But
the Irish also dominated the Top Five places in the competition,
with Peter Charles taking Fourth, and Billy Twomey Fifth. Ireland's
Clem McMahon also took a 12th place.
