Four glorious days of sunshine at Blair Atholl combined with top class sport and entertainment led to record crowds at the Bowmore Blair Castle International Horse Trials and Country Fair. Overall winner of the two star competition was Lucy Wiegersma, who made her long journey from Penzance in Cornwall worthwhile by winning the prestigious Duke of Atholl Challenge Cup and Bowmore Trophy and also the Sir Wattie Bronze for the top British rider. She finished on her excellent dressage score of 49.6 riding River Vally. In second place, adding just 0.4 of a time fault to his dressage of 51.4 was Australia's Clayton Fredericks with the six-year-old bay gelding, Ben Along Time. Terry Boon from Leicestershire came third with Foreign Exchange, a seven-year-old chestnut gelding which has been placed every time out this year. Leading Scottish rider and winner of the Menzies Rosebowl was triple Olympic silver medallist Ian Stark from Selkirk. He was riding Lady Hartington's seven-year-old bay gelding Full Circle and was delighted to finish in seventh place on his dressage score of 59.6. The Scottish team, led by Ian was victorious in the two star team event. Blairgowrie's Mary McFarlane with McCallan, Louisa Milne Home from Kinross with Kings Berry and Sarah Clark from Kirkcudbright and The Master Farrier completed the team. The three-man Irish team of Eric Smiley, Jim Newsam and Marcus Reid finished second with the Under 25 British team which included local girl, Lexi MacKinnon in third place. The one star section was won by 23 year-old Lisa Maynard from Gloucestershire riding Peter Scott's seven-year-old bay gelding, Sky Sport. Lisa was competing in her first three-day event and added nothing to her dressage score of 53.4. Clayton Fredericks and Mulligans Creek were second, also finishing on their dressage score of 54.6, while in third place was Caroline Powell from New Zealand with the giant 17hh Ballycathro on 55.2. Leading Scottish rider in this section was Nicky Roncoroni riding her gran, Jean Sole's Glen Corran. This six-year-old is being aimed at the six and seven-year-old event horse championships in Lyons next year. Kim Ingleby from Stirlingshire had five penalties in the showjumping to drop from eighth place to twelfth on her own grey gelding, Party Life. The Young Scotland team which included Nicky and Kim along with Tessa Elliot Lockhart and Anne Millar won the one star team event, followed by Old Scotland - Tom Clark, Fiona Muirhead, Ella Kidd and David Gatherer. England B were in third place.
