IRELAND TAKES FIRST AND JOINT SECOND IN
HICKSTEAD DERBY
Ireland's Peter Charles, riding <Corrada>
won the Peugeot Derby at Hickstead this afternoon (Sunday), winning a Peugeot
206 cabriolet car and Stg£10,000 in prize money, while Corkman Billy
Twomey on <Give Me Remus> took joint Second, picking up prize money of
Stg£12,500.
Charles finished with just two faults and a
time of 181.47, while Twomey clocked up four faults and a time of 170.23. He
shared second place with Britain's Nicky Boulter, riding <Magna Carta
2>.
Ireland has had a superb run of successes at
the prestigious British venue during the last two years.
On July 26 this year, Irish riders Kevin
Babington and Peter Charles took First and Third places, respectively, at the
prestigious Hickstead British Grand Prix, while Ireland's Dermott Lennon took
Fifth. The following day, The Irish quartet of Dermott Lennon, Cian O'Connor,
Peter Charles and Kevin Babington won the British Samsung Nations Cup at
Hickstead, beating the German favourites by just one fence.
Ireland also won the Nations Cup at Hickstead
in 2000 (Cian O'Connor, Cameron Hanley, Dermott Lennon, Kevin Babington), as
well as the King George V Gold Cup (Cameron Hanley). Ireland's Billy Twomey
went on to win the Speed Derby at the Hickstead Derby meeting in August of
2000, collecting a prize purse of £3,000.
