Michael Dorman and Quriel
Win $10,000 Open Jumper Welcome Stake at HITS Catskills V |
ELLENVILLE, NY (August 1, 2001)-Michael Dorman,
44, of Jamison, Pennsylvania, riding Quriel won the $10,000 Open Jumper Welcome
Stake at HITS Catskills V in Ellenville, New York, today. Dorman out-jumped a
field of 15 entries, taking home $3,000 for owner Wyndmont, Inc. Dorman also
placed third with Dumbo de Chapelle owned by Flora Ribeira. "Quriel loves
to jump and he's a great competitor," said Dorman. "His personality
is a little tricky. You have to be friends with him, then he'll help you all
the way. You have to know when to challenge him and when to just be real
friends with him. He's a strong personality that works beautifully once you
find that balance with him."
Danny Foster of Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, designed the Table II.2.b. course
in which riders who are clear in Round One stay in the ring and immediately
ride a Jump-Off course. For Round One, Foster built a 12-jump course that
included an oxer-vertical double at Fence No. 4, a vertical-oxer double at 10,
and a liverpool at No. 11. Time Allowed was set at 90 seconds. The Jump-off
course required riders to re-jump Fence Nos.1 and 2, turn left and rollback to
the oxer at No.13, then turn right and loop around to a new jump, a vertical at
Fence No. 14, then gallop to the 9AB double, turn right for another gallop back
to the liverpool at No. 11 and finish with the oxer at No.12. Time Allowed was
set at 55 seconds.
Dorman was the first rider on course with Quriel and posted the first
double-clear. His Jump-Off time of 47.595 proved to be unbeatable. Jennifer
Hoctor of Coral Cables, Florida, on her Narew turned in the next clear Round
One, but on the Jump-Off course, she had a rail in 49.622, which put her in
fourth place. Ian Millar, of Perth, Ontario, the seven-time Canadian Olympic
Team Member, had the next clear Round One on Aftershock and chalked up the only
other double-clear of the class, but his Jump-Off time of 49.226 relegated him
to second place for owner The Point & Millar Brooke, Ltd.
U.S. Sydney Olympic Team Member Nona Garson of Lebanon, New Jersey, on New
Flame jumped the next clear Round One, but followed it with an eight-fault
Jump-Off in 48.376 which put her in fifth place for owner The Ridge Farm LLC.
Michael Dorman returned to the ring on Dumbo de Chapelle and put in the final
clear Round One but had a rail down in the Jump-Off, clocking in at 45.159,
which was good enough for third place.
"It was a difficult line from Fence 3 to 4AB," said Dorman,
describing Round One. "I chose to leave the stride out. I did the forward
six strides. I thought the big oxer would be easier to do in a forward stride,
then worry about the steady two later, then reversing it and going slow to the
big oxer at 5. Fence 9AB was a vertical-oxer, and extremely tight. My horse
gave me a 100% effort. He was slow and he stretched really well, so I was
thrilled with him. In the Jjump-Off he was just perfect, really. He was into
running and being smooth and concentrating on all the jumps."
Quriel is an eight-year-old, 16.2-hand Belgian gelding that Dorman started
riding less than a year ago. "We've been bringing him along," said
Dorman. "We bought him as a Preliminary horse in Europe. We're working our
way up and he's starting to do the Grand Prix." Dorman recently returned
from a show jumping tour in Canada where Quriel made his Grand Prix debut.
"We had a great time. It was extremely difficult. There were three World
Cup qualifiers up there. Quriel placed in two of the Grand Prix. They were
World Cup, and they were big."
Dorman brought eight horses to HITS Catskills V and will ride Quriel and Dumbo
de Chapelle in the $100,000 Nevele Grande Grand Prix on Sunday.
The $10,000 Open Jumper Welcome Stake is held every Wednesday at HITS Catskills
horse shows.
