"Thoroughbreds That Jump"

August 5 2001 -- "Thoroughbreds That Jump" is a series of charts and essays just posted at Thoroughbred Heritage http://www.tbheritage.com , a web site devoted to the history of the thoroughbred horse. Contributors to the material include equine researchers from the U.K., Europe, Australia, and the U.S.

The feature includes racing charts which list the winners and breeding of major British, European and U.S. Steeplechases: the Grand National, the Irish Grand National, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, The Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, the Gran Premio Merano, the American Grand National and the Maryland Hunt Cup. It also includes three charts that track these winners and some international show jumpers and combined training horses in sire-line descent from the three thoroughbred foundation sires, offering insight into sire lines which tended to produce horses that competed successfully over obstacles. The charts are illustrated with images and short biographies of winners of these races.

"Thoroughbreds That Jump" also includes an essay on the "Thoroughbred Roots of the Modern Show Jumper," which analyses the sire lines of the top 100 show jumpers of the past decade, according to FEI/BCM results, and discusses the thoroughbred influence on all modern warmblood registries. Another essay, "J.J. Maher: An Irish Tale," describes the history and breeding methods of an early twentieth century breeder of both Grand National winners and winners of the principal "classic" races in Great Britain on the flat, including the Epsom Derby.
